Question no charge

93 elctra glide 96000mls regulator replaced reading 12.86 volts at batt does fluctuate, when throttle opened up voltage drops 1-3 volts.oil inside rubber stator plug[causing short perhaps]? tried taking reading from stator connection wlth multimeter and zilch nothing should i just pull it apart and change stator?i;ve got to change gear shaft anyway [worn splines] and as primary has to come off may as well do both feedback appreciated thanks.

Looked at the title of this thread and thought we were gonna learn how to get something for free ... free and Harley..should have known better

The stator is a coil. It puts out AC voltage. If you checked for DC at the stator you will get nothing. First disconnect plug and check in ohms range should be close to zero pin to pin then check each pin to ground (chassis) should be open circuit. Next check AC volts with engine running I believe should be 24 to 48 volts AC.

stator spec is 16 to 20 volts AC per 1000 rpms ( so 3000 rpms should be 45 to 60 volts AC)

you can search for comprehensive charging system checks here at the forums. ( there is an electrical tech forum )

you need to be able to check ohms, DC volts and AC volts.

and any checks made in the DC range must occur with a fully charged battery other wise all the numbers are skewed

Thanks guys,stripped it down today to replace gearshaft, stator looks ok so maybe new regulator although this was replaced within last six months such is life.

Don't laugh. Get your nose up close to the altenator and smell it. If it smells even slightly like Sh%t it's fried.
