Default Motor Running Hot

The last two rides I have noticed the oil temp running really high. This afternoon in traffic, I hit the 300* mark for the first time. It is very hot and humid here, but the highest I have seen before this week was 285. I have my lowers off this time, but on the other day I rode and saw it hit 290*.

I have been messing around with my AFR settings on the PCV autotuner, so that could be the culprit. When I got home tonight, I checked the oil dipstick while the bike was hot and it was close to the add a quart mark. I added half a quart and will check again tomorrow after it warms up. I am running synthetic oil. Riding home at dusk this evening the bike was around 245*.

I think getting my oil back up to level and changing the AFR should resolve the issue. Anything else anyone can think of that might cause higher temps? I thought about investing in an oil cooler. I am more concerned it is the AFR settings and the bike running lean as I get some pinging under load. It is just rediculous I think to have to set the AFR at 13.2 to get the bike running good. Hard on gas, but cooler motor. Price to pay with open exhaust and heavy breather I guess.

I don't think you've got a problem, its hot and if you don't keep the motor moving its going to cook even if you get the AFRs where you want em. Do you still have the stock header with the catalyst? I would start there but even then its not going to be that big a diff.

I've seen 287 with 90 temps on a stock 2010 SG with no oil cooler. There are times I wish I'd never bought the temp gauge and just ride it and forget about it.

add the fuel, pay for losing 2 or 3 MPG, save the motor

What was your target a/f ratio when it was hot? Im putting a autotune on my bike this week, just did a 107 kit and had to really ritchen it up to run decent, but have no idea where my a/f is.

I don't see a problem here. With air cooled engines you have to keep them moving and full of oil. So, if you get caught in traffic and have to slow down, your engine temp is going to rise. 300 degree oil is not in melt down territory. It is hot alright but get it moving and it comes back down in short order. You are smart to be running synthetic in stop and go traffic situations as it will stand higher temps than dino oil before it starts to break down. When the fins start to smoke, then you have a hot bike.

I am going to connect my laptop to the PCV this morning and pull up the map. I may call Fuelmoto and see if they have an AFR map that has bee setup for my bike and add ons. The base map they gave me is not bad, but the rear cylinder runs too lean with that base map.

The base map they gave me was really lean from idle to about 3000 for my bike, had to fatten it up quite a bit, but it was only a base map, not specific for my bike ,temp, or altitude.
