the compensator and the clutch come off ( along with the chain and tensioner).
1.) disconnect the battery before starting- the starter can be energised by accident from inside the primary case...this turns the chain and plucks off fingers- disconnect the cables ( neg first, pos 2nd) --- it does not matter if the ign is off or the keys in another State--- manipulating the starter gear can pass electricity to the starter motor.
DO NOT use air impact tools on the comp or clutch hub nut ( left hand thread) air impact tool can knock the magnets loose on the roter...destroying the brand new stator...
and used on the clutch hub nut can damage the tranny shifting mechanism.
PIA but use hand tools, a long breaker bar will do it
if the chain tensioner is worn, consider the hayden m6
this is where the manual pays for itself, mistakes are expensive
what exactly is a compensator?? is that the rotor for the stator?
ive got a regulator im gonna put on. batt died last week. replaced that. now when it starts the chk engine lite comes on and the volts hover around 12. after a few seconds and me twisting the throttle the volts climb to 14/14.5 and the lite goes out and all remains good. so im mentally preppin myself in case its the stator
If you're mechanical, it's a pain. If you're not, don't even try it. Mine was a total pain! Nice job to have DONE!
well i am mechanical but gettin old. i usually throw a fifty to one of my guys and have em do whatever but............ actually my indie only wants bout 350 parts and labor if it needs one so i prob will just go that route
The compensator adds a buffer to the sudden shock put on the drive line by the starter, hard down shifting and smooths out the power transmitted from the engine.
It is attached to drive shaft, outboard of the stator and rotor. The primary chain attaches to it in the front and to the clutch in the rear.
The compensator was upgraded to the Screaming Eagle version on the Touring models in 2011. If you have increased compression on a 2007-2010 FLH, it's advised to upgrade to the SE version.
