I removed the 4 torx bolts and windshield screws, but couldn't get the fairing to lift off my 2006 CVO ultra. It seems the highway light bar is in the way. On you-tube I saw someone just lift it up and away from the highway lights, without removing them. I know the headlight wire is attached. Do I need to reach in and blindly remove the headlight wire? I want to install a connector to the headlight wiring to keep the highway lights on when the highbeam is on and would rather not pay the harley dealer an hour labor to do it. Any help would be much appreciated.

 

There are screws on the back side as well.

 

No. He got all of them. I had to drop the light bar on my ultra to get the outer fairing off to do the same mod your doing.

 

Never had to remove my passing lamps on any of my bikes....just reach around the fairing and remove the headlight plug...on the left and right side of the plug you will need to squeeze the plug to release it from the headlight bulb..hope that makes sense...reach around and squeeze the plug...may have to wiggle it a little...easy really...then lift the fairing up and away...

put a towel on your fender to prevent damage if something drops

put tube socks over the spotlights

pick out a soft place for your fairing AND your windscreen.

remove the windscreen- PUT the center screw back in loosely to hold the thing together

remove the 4 inner screws,

you can then remove the remaining screw while you hold the fairing, fingers is easier than using a tool

and as above just reach in and unplug the headlight

Normally the fairing will come out by tilting it forward and then pulling it straight up & you can easily get the the headlight plug. But... Ive seen a few where the spotlights were closer to the fairing than others. If this is the case you can loosen the spotlight mounts to where they drop downward and out of the way. No reason to have to remove the spotlight bar.

Putting a towel on the fender is a smart move, many fenders have been dinged by a dropped fairing.

 

There have been times I have had to raise the left side(facing the bike from the front) to clear the highway light because of cable runs on the inside that have become pushed forward or sagging. No need to loosen the light bar. Follow everyones lead about protecting your fender and fairing paint from the backs of the running lights.

 

Same here on my Ultra. I cannot get the outer fairing of without removing the light bar. Put a good padding of (bathroom towels in my case) and rest the bar without disconnecting the wiring on the fender.
No use trying to squeeze the fairing through because it will not save time that way.

 

Thanks for the tips. I was able to wiggle the fairing away from the lightbar and removed it, nervously I might add! Glad I did- since I was able to accomplish my goal of adding the connector to keep the passing lights on with the highbeam. Also, zip-tied some of the loose wires. Droping the lightbar is probably the way to go though- since I was afraid I would scratch the fairing as I lifted it over the lamps. Thanks for the input!!
