I guess the issue was resolved for me, apparently the tray option won't work because it won't accommodate my iPhone in a case, so USB in the back it is.
I plug mine into the aux port on the HK radio. I listen to the prompts, but also look at the map. It sometimes is extremely difficult to just listen only. You will get a voice prompt that says "bear right" on some road. You look at the map and the road is straight. Also, the wonderful "turn right then turn right" voice prompt can be a little confusing. Looking at the map helps. The voice prompts also let you know when you are close to a turn. It can take some getting used to.
We have a bluetooth intercom, although I have never tried to tie it in to the gps. Mrs B can see it over my shoulder, so I get a running commentary when necessary! V effective.....
I currently use just the map, but at times the screen is very difficult to see due to the glare. The Garmin app may just be a viable option for me as well as I already have the hdpdplus.
Try one of those clear stick-on shields. They filter UV + make the screen much easier to see in direct sunlight.
