Ok, I did a quick search but did not find an answer, so be kind. I have a 2012 FLHTK, and it was delivered with Rush slip-ons, last June. So I just had the 5K service completed and want to do something about all the heat emanating from the header (a common complaint). At first I thought I would just replace the the headers with Rushs' dual header and be done with it, but upon reading and talking to a bunch of people it seems it isn't that simple. I was told I need to upgrade the intake system, and than have a tuner installed, than have to take it to Harley to get it mapped. (I wish I had known this prior to buying) So I contact local Dealer and they quoted some huge prices for the purchase and installation of the parts. Naturally, I than asked "ok, what if I install the parts and just bring the bike in for the tune (mapping). Answer $270.00, which is the same price as the installation of the SE super tuner they had quoted.
Now when I bought the bike, I bought the 5 year unlimited warranty.
Questions for the group:
1. Does my plan seem reasonable? (Seems like a lot to drop the heat, but I bought the bike to cruise, and I have found that it is not very comfortable with the excessive heat coming off the catalytic converter).
2. On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is it to install the three items (Rush Header, SE stage 1 AC, and SE Super Tuner). My abilities and tools are better than most, I've built a couple of Harley's both for the road and a show bike. But to be honest my last build is my 1990 Springer, that I just finished rebuilding last April.
3. Will this void my warranty? I would hate to dump $1500 into this and than find out that I have voided my warranty.
First. Just because you do the head pipe doesn't mean you HAVE to do the intake. Most people just do them both at the same time. Also if you don't do the intake then you don't NEED a tuner. Your bike would run better with one though. Second. A head pipe is easy to install on your own. No need to go to the dealership to buy the part or have it installed. You can get it cheaper elsewhere (fuelmoto). Even if you decide to do the intake and tuner they are easy to install also unless you get the Harley tuner. Call fuelmoto. And lastly. No. The install of these parts will not void your warranty unless it can be proven that these parts directly caused the problem.
It will not void the warranty unless they can prove it caused the problem in question.
So, if your transmission goes out, your pipes will not have voided the warranty, unless they want to make the ridiculous argument that the pipes caused the problem.
Not sure, about warranty (However I would bet the dealer will not want to cover in this case) but there is a thread on here explaining in great deal how to remove the Catalytic Conveter from your stock headpipe, thus 0 cost which would solve the heat issue. And as mentioned above, no need for any other purchases if all you want to do is get rid of the heat, and don't care about increased Horsepower. Search "Decatting" and there is a wealth of info. And by the way....Congrats on the purchase. I bought my 2012 Limited 2 days after Christmas and already have close to 12000 miles on it...you won't believe how fast the miles fly by....

Warranty coverage problems kind of depends on the dealer. I've had dealers that try to blame any change for other problems, dealers that want to do all changes in their shop to cover the bike and my current prefered dealer has never said one word about my stage 1 when doing warranty work. Almost encourages customers to be knowledgable of and keep their bike maintained. Think I'll keep going back to this one until I run into a problem even though they are about 20 minutes further away than where I got the bike. BTW, I am running the FuelMoto Stage 1 with head pipe which I installed.
It won't void the warranty, however I've heard my share of stories where the dealer has blamed issues on work that was done at home. It typically causes issues when other issues come up.
I get the impression the dealer does a once over on the bike when you bring it in and if they find after market parts and don't have WO in the system for them, they look for ways to blame the the after market work.
i have same set up rush exhaust, rush head pipes, and went thru same info searches you are doing. i decided to put in hi flow air cleaner and harley tuner for the health of the engine .
dealer did work i am not able to.
results are seat of the pants impressive i have 14k on it now and am happy.. cooler, faster louder , better fuel economy... . do it... generic stories about what dealer will do if warrenty issues come up are not your concearn ask the guys at the shop you are mostly likely to use , dont ask awhat happened 1400 miles away with different conditions parts and people.
1.) the 2 year factory warranty you have a copy of.
the DEALER cannot change the terms of this agreement, only the H-D MC. ( so get any promises in writing and what happens if you are 500 miles away- who pays to trailer the bike home)
2.) the extended warranty is with a 3rd party, NOT H-D, or the dealer. you should read that over.
Defeating emissions controls, altering or defeating the ECM ( engine control module "computer") almost certainly voids your warranty coverage.
( why? because the data used to determine proper rpm range, fuel mixtures and rev limits is altered outside of predetermined engineering or design specs by the "user"- the entire drivetrain can be damaged as a result of this.)
You have all the paperwork there, just read it over and be prepared to take responsibility for modifications you do to the bike.
None of us guys on the internets can advise you better than the contract(s) which detail the warranty service agreement
simple enough.
I'm all for modding a bike, but the owner needs to be ready for the consequences.
As for specific modifications, take your time to decide what results you want and how to get there- a simple stage 1 can run from a few hundred bucks to a couple of thousand depending on components chosen.
I would suggest that a stage 1 is pretty basic for a home mechanic. Working on a motorcycle has some 'best practices" and the factory service manual is a must and back that up with youtube tutorials and questions here.

I was told by the dealership my changes would void the extended warranty. I read my warranty, it said my changes would void the extended warranty. I cancelled the warranty and I'm waiting for my refund check.
