It's all in the sound. Just sounds like it's running better (if you like that Hoover Vac sound) and that sound you heard and described as pinging between 2500-3000 range was the exhaust note of two sticks of dynamite going off at 625 - 750 time a minute. Of course I am JUST giving my opinion. But that is pretty high in the RPM for hearing ping and usually you would here it lower in the RPM range under load from being one gear too high and really cranking in the throttle to accelerate. If it really was pinging at that range it would take electronic advance control to fix it, not more air.

Good information i have felt like it was unlikely that the big sucker could do this with out some kind of tuner in the mix. I shouldn't be getting any more air though it with out having done something with the pipes, should I?

When you look at the throttle body bore diameter you have to realize only so much air can go down it. You also have to realize in a normal aspirated engine the air is NOT sucked into engine. If is pushed into by the atmospheric pressure just like our lungs. I dare say that at WOT the SE filters and the like may flow slightly more then a stock filter but it's not a lot more. It's more noise then true HP if all you change is the airfilter. Now do all the other stuff and it will make more HP.

You are getting WAY more air than you did with a stock filter. Since you have the same restrictive pipes, your engine (which is in reality an air pump) cannot USE the full measure of air, since it can not release it (restrictive pipes) as fast as it is receiving it. Or rather, input exceeds output. However, there is no question that you are getting more air than you did. It's just that you are able to utilize only a certain portion of it. Before I added my pipe (see photo), I added the Ness Big Sucker II. The difference has NOTHING to do with a perceived performance increase due to the extra intake rush noise. My bike ran like there was a pair of socks stuffed into the inlet tract. It virtually hit a brick wall at 3,000 RPM, and for a while, I thought this was typical HD, since I never owned one before. With no other mods at all (and NO XIEDs) it revved freely and was like a different bike. The new pipes added the same amount of difference as the intake when I installed it.

It is not really an air pump in a true sense that builds on a number of intakes to create pressure. In reality it can indeed push out more expanded heated air (exhaust) since it pumps it out on one of the strokes of the 4 stroke but the intake is limited to the apx 14.7 lbs atmospheric pressure to get air in. Intake is only from the vacuum created from the downward stroke of the piston.
