I dont get it. I got 70,000 miles on my SE comp. Even pulled it out a month ago to see how it was and clean it up. My bars and ramps had some wear but that was it.
Something else to keep in mind. Those particles that come off the comp end up in the clutch plates and stator also. This thing is a joke.
To the OP. If your tension adjuster is at all loose, it will help rattle the comp at start up. One of my (3) comps was really clanking at start up and when I went in to replace it, the tensioner had broke and was not working properly.

Something just dawned on me. The SE comp was actually thought out and made for the Rocker. Rockers ALWAYS, from day one had these. Seeing the pics here, I would have to say the SE Comps cannot handle the weight of the Touring bikes. I'm on my FOURTH SE comp. I'm on the second in the 120r Ultra. The OP should go buy a stock comp and try that again. When I had my 107, I went through 2 SE Comps on that bike, got pissed and then installed the stocker, on a decent 107, lasted like 25k miles.... about 5 times longer than the SEs did in that bike. I NOW have a Custom SE Comp in my bike, and THAT finally seems to be working.
You can buy a 'kit' that has everything except for the Stator for a few dollars less that the full SE kit. make SURE, that you install the xxxxx- 08A and not the xxxxx- 08 kit.

Its hard to say why they fail. Mine is a first gen SE comp. No way I would go back to stock as mine came apart.
I'm thinking that the stock auto-tensioner may be the root of all these problems.......I think it's just too tight and it's tearing everything up.I just recently put a Hayden M6 in my '09 also (18K). Made a world of difference As far as the tensioner noise, But then I had a different kind of primary noise. It turned out that the inner primary bearing had already been trashed. The dealer put a new one in last week Everything works as smooth as butter and this is with the stock compensator. It's nice and quiet too. THE ONLY BAD THING IS THEY PINCHED THE INNER PRIMARY SEAL AND IT'S LEAKING NOW!! So it went back in yesterday and they're replacing the seal and I'll be picking it up tomorrow. Hopefully starting from scratch with M6 installed it should be problem free for many miles.

That could be. My auto has been perfect so maybe thats why I havnt had any comp issues. Here's my tensioner at 113k. I get 5/8 free play.
Do the compensator tend to be problems with a built engine? Mine is stock inside and I plan to keep it that way. I always start in neutral. Helps the clutch but not sure about the comp. I have used a 10W40 in the primary so far.
Went outside, started the bike 6 times and NO noise whatsoever from the primary. Going to leave it alone for now, since the cam install project starts today.
