The stock comp was banging on start-up after about 7000 miles.
As far as rebuilding the SE Comp, I had no idea you could do that and if so, what parts to you swap out? Maybe Dawg will chime in about the rebuild-able parts.
I was just going to throw in a new SE Comp at $190 (w/ 20% discount), cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Another thing I just thought about, my bikes been having trouble starting lately. It starts on the first push of the start button but seems to struggle like there's to much compression to over come. I was thinking maybe it's time for a new battery (org. battery from 08) but maybe it has something to do with the compensator.
You have the 96" motor so with those 255 cams ought to be ok with the 9.2:1 comp.
if your battery connections are clean and tight, and battery is on tender parked over periods of not being used, should be okay.
if it is the 09 battery how long do they usually last? maybe battery needs replaced though? My FLSTF 07 battery lasted 2 years before I had to replace it,
But I did not always use a battery tender on it.
I'm thinking that the stock auto-tensioner may be the root of all these problems.......I think it's just too tight and it's tearing everything up.I just recently put a Hayden M6 in my '09 also (18K). Made a world of difference As far as the tensioner noise, But then I had a different kind of primary noise. It turned out that the inner primary bearing had already been trashed. The dealer put a new one in last week Everything works as smooth as butter and this is with the stock compensator. It's nice and quiet too. THE ONLY BAD THING IS THEY PINCHED THE INNER PRIMARY SEAL AND IT'S LEAKING NOW!! So it went back in yesterday and they're replacing the seal and I'll be picking it up tomorrow. Hopefully starting from scratch with M6 installed it should be problem free for many miles.
i wonder if it is that simple, can the auto-tensioner be the problem ? i am wondering if my FM 107 is gonna tare things up.

I don't think it's helping things IMHO...I'm just making a guess as far as the bearings go.... When the the tensioners where manually adjusted, it was said that if the primary makes a "whiring" sound that it was too tight and...would ruin the bearings. Well the the OEM auto-tensioiner on my '09 made a "whiring" noise like crazy. I was told it was normal and ride it....So i did and the IPB failed. I think the "racheting" action on the OEM Auto tensioner makes the chain too tight. IPB's are going out quite frequently now, so why do you think Baker came out with the new "manually" adjusted tensioner? Granted the Hayden M6 is an "auto-tensioner" but it doesn't rachet up tight at a certain point.....it seems to keep the right amount of tension when needed with the spring action only. And, very minimal "whiring" noise. Mine makes no noise at all
I'm thinking that I will keep the stock comp provided that it is in good shape, change tensioners to the Hayden next season and replace the IPB and other bearings next year to be proactive.
I Heard you can get a heavy duty spring kit for the se comp. Anyone know where? I have to start my King in gear to keep enough tension on the comp to prevent wind up on starting or it sounds like its going to destruck.

Haven't heard that but have heard some buy just the spring kit and add one extra from there old spring pack.

I don't see how that is possible as the springs are spring washers that face each other , two sets look like this () and one single washer that faces out (. So the whole setup looks like this () () ( . Maybe they did something on the stock comp that has a coil spring.
Took it apart today and light wear but nothing obvious so when it stops raining I'll warm it up to see how it acts. If I have the same problem I'll go back to the stock. I think I can add a washer under the coil spring to increase pressure.
WURK TRUK--YOU STATED
You can buy a 'kit' that has everything except for the Stator for a few dollars less that the full SE kit. make SURE, that you install the xxxxx- 08A and not the xxxxx- 08 kit.
Just checked and have the 08 what is the difference between that and the 08a? Thanks
