I think Eastern's theory sounds good. And I think if it were in gear, it might even be worse. Seems like in gear it would transfer slight movements to the engine as it bounced on the trailer and this might move things enough to sort of shake the oil down out of the lifter.
And don't let 'em give you too much crap about trailering... Unless someone figures out a way to get an RV and a bike to a destination with only one driver then I'm trailering too...
