Default The red key light

2003, Ultra, has a FOB. The red key light comes on after about 5 seconds after the engine is started, and stays on. I replaced the battery in the FOB as well, and the old FOB battery tested good.

What does this light mean, I tried to search but get 100's of hits on words like "key" and "light" and do not have an owners manual ?

Is there a way to reset the light on a 2003. On 2007's and up you press the left and right turn signals, while facing West...or something like that ?

I also disconnected the bikes starter battery to re-route some wires, could this have caused this issue, and do I now need to re-program the security or what ?

The bike starts fine, runs fine, all is good, except for the darn red key light that is on. What's up with that.

Thanks

One more thing, on the way home from work today on the bike, start it up, the red key light comes on, then after about 10 seconds it went out.

Indie said that trouble codes will come on for 50 starts, then fade into the history of the memory.

Anyone know what causes the red key light error or code ?

Sine I disconnectded the battery and replaced the FOB battey, do I need to re-program the secret code, or somehow clear the clodes ?

press and hold your mileage reset button then turn your ignition to the 1st on position, your speed odometer an tack will do a full sweep, then let go of your reset button, you should see diag where your mileage appears, press your reset button one time then look to see what letters appear, one of them will be flashing, tell me what letter is flashing

after you find which letter is blinking press your reset button once to move to the letter that is blinking, then press once more and you will get that letter + 4 digits, write those down, that is where the computer seen a problem, all you have to do to reset those is press one at a time till you see end, then press and hold until it resets, then turn your ignition switch back to off.

So, I went and did this...remember this is on a 2003 fuel injection Ultra. Things changed 2007 and up.

1. Press the rest button, turn ignition to 1st position. The tack needle does not do a full sweep.

2. Let go of the odo rest button, and press again, see :-
d01clr
press odo rest, see
d02clr
press rest, see
d03clr
and so on, last code is
d10clr

then, see
PPU

then a number
8xxx3 (x's are numbers, is this my PIN number ?)

Nothing and no code is flashing.

Red key light comes on, then goes out after about 10 sec's.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) through 2008

Speedometer Self Diagnostics:

The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run - Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button.

Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate.

The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "P S SP t" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module.
The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check.

To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time.

(from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)

P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release.

If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.

NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up.

Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9.

If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

Thanks for the delails.

I took the bike down to the dealer today, for them to have a look at it. They pulled the codes, as you described and there are no error codes.

Then he said that the red key light is the Security, and the light will illuminate for 8 seconds after the bike is started then will go out. I told him that yesterday the Security light did not go out after 8 seconds, and remained on all the way to work (4 miles).

Then in the afternoon, it went out 8 seconds after starting the bike. Said that is normal.

So, those with Security, do you see the red key light for 8 seconds after starting the bike ?

I have a 2003 EFI RK and when I turn the ignition to on the engine light and security light come on, by the time the fuel pump cycles off both lights go out and I start the engine. The security light has never come back on briefly or otherwise. I have owned since new, the security system was factory installed. Even when my FOB battery was low or dead the light has always acted the same.

Greetings Blueflame1
Just curious since your model doesn’t do a full sweep of your Speed Odometer & Tack when you go into the diag mode, would you perform this again so that we all can see what components you have on your bike?

Right after you turn your Ignition to on with your speed odometer push button pressed, release earlier and you should see PSSPt, (your letters will vary, write them down).

P=ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module (EFI) / Ignition Control Module (Carbureted)

S=TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal / Turn Signal Security Module)
SP=Speedometer
T=Tachometer

To answer your question about Security, when the computer of our bikes are turned on it performs a system check each time so when we see these lights come on the computer is checking ALL when it is turned on.
