I run an 8" recurve all the time. I can see over it nicely. I stay with it when the cold weather comes because in this part of the world we can run into fog which instantly makes the windshield impossible to see through, so its more important to be able to see over than to deflect more wind. Safety over comfort I guess.
Its common for my customers to have 2 or more windshields for summer, winter & solo vs two up riding. Depending on your height, it maybe a combo of 7 for summer & 9 or 10 for winter, but this would vary for each person.
Short for bike nights, styling or short weekend rides & tall for the longer rides, colder weather or with a passenger.
My road king has a detachable tall windshield for cool weather and a batwing outer fairing for even cooler weather that has a tall windshield attached so it is also quick release.
I dont care for shorter windshields but I am 6'2" so for me they dont offer much protection and dont look right to me.
I use a 4" during the summer because I like to feel the wind. For winter or for long rides I put on a 7" which works for me to deflect wind but still able to see over it.
