First Service
Just a quick opinion question for you all..I bought a 13' SG, and just turned 800 miles this weekend. The dealer advised the first service around 1000 miles, but with winter surely coming up I don't think I'll hit it this year. I heard from someone I ride with you need to change fluids in the spring anyway, so am I better off just waiting and do the first service in the spring? It going to be in the garage on a battery tender all winter. I just don't want to waste the $300 on the first service now if I have to do it again in the spring. Sorry if this is a stupid question...but as far as I know the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Thanks in advance.

you want to change fluids before a slow period.
that way when stored, the motor internals are bathed in fresh clean oil- not oil contaminated with acids, water and gasoline by products.
while stored, do not just "go out and start the bike"
If you start it, do so with the intention of riding it so that it is fully warm and any water condensate in the oil will boil out.
when cold, the EFI makes an extra rich mixture ( like a choke) to get the motor going.
the piston rings do not seal as well and some of that extra gas will leak by into the crankcase where the oil will pick it up
just starting it and reving it will also form a fair amount of water condensate in the motor and the exhaust pipes

When you consider they will change the fluids, and wash your bike and safety inspect it, I would strongly recommend unless your first service is free like mine was I would just order your oil and filters and do it yourself at 1000 miles at home, you have all winter to detail the bike.
It is very easy to do and wont come close to $300.00 even with synthetic in all three holes.

I second what mkguitar says. Plus: You are in Lenexa, Kansas right? There are many days of riding left in this season (I hope). I am not that far from you, it was about 80 today. This weekend it will be in the low to mid seventies. We can get the occasional really nice day in December, even January sometimes. You are going to end up going out to your garage on a nice day in November and kicking yourself.

I would change the oils now rather than later. My rational being that during break-in the oil will become more contaminated with particulates and combustion by-products than it would after initial break-in. That's why the first service is recommended relatively soon when compared to regular in-service change intervals.

Thanks for all the quick responses-I'm going to call and get it scheduled. I'm going to have them do the first one just to check everything over and make sure nothing is wrong..plus I am hearing a couple strage noises I want checked out. So if I have this first service done now, is it necessary to change the oil again in spring or should it be ok still?
