I bought a new Dyna 12/09. It has had the 1000 mi service late March. Up until June I put had put a total of 4700 mi on it. I had arranged for the 5000 mi service, but before I could get it done I started having problems with vertigo and have not been able to ride it at all.
My question is, it's now sitting in the garage with 4950 mi on it and I probably will not ride not anymore this year, should I get it serviced now or just put some Seafoam in the tank and wait until spring to get the 5000 mile service?
If you can, change all the fluids before winter layup. You don't want old oil sitting in there all winter. But if you can't change it then I think it will be ok.
Don't start the bike till you are going to ride it in spring.
Best to get your service now. Old oil contains corrosive contaminates. The longer it sits, the more damage it can cause. When you store your bike, make sure to get a battery tender (not a charger). Don't start the engine unless your going to run it for an hour, condensation can form on the inside of the engine (not good). Make sure to use a good quality fuel stabilizer and fill the tank to the top. If your storing the bike in an unheated space, make sure to use a fogging spray on the inside of the cylinders. You can prevent the aluminum from corroding by spraying it with vegetable oil (PAM), make sure to avoid the brakes. The oil will easily wash off with soap.
Thank you for the information. I will be arranging to get it service shortly.
I do live in a snow area, but the bike is store in a garage attached to the house and it seldom gets much below freezing.
Last winter I found if I park the bike on a 1/4" piece of luan plywood instead of just on the concrete floor it really help stop the condensate that would form on the bike. I still have not decided if the cover is a good thing or a bad thing. Think I will just throw a couple of old sheets over it this winter.
Hopefully this vertigo thing will be resolved by next year and I'll be back to riding 300-500 miles a week again.

DE is a snow area??? Maybe last year but not normally. Yeah, I agree, just get it done. Can't hurt. You'll be ready to ride, or sell, or whatever in spring.
I live in northwest Iowa and we get snow. I leave mine in my garage that is attached to my house. I put a vinyl cover over it everyday and night in the summer and winter. It sits on cement floor. I change the fluids in the spring right before i take it out, than I know they are fresh and ready to go. I do put stabil in the gas tank with only a 1/2 a tank of fuel. Never used a battery tender and my battery is still original on an 06 RKC. My chrome is shiny, my wineberry paint is great so I have not had any problems with what I have been doing. I guess to each their own on what they think hurts and is good for their baby.
