I love my King..
I don't think I can afford much more than a 2006 after doing some online shopping. What are the improvements? As far as I can tell a little longer with a little bigger engine and rear tire. I'm 5' 10" 200 lbs and all I got is 10 grand! If its really worth waiting for as in terms of major problems with some years or models I will wait for the right deal. Thats the kind of info I'm looking for here.

Thank all for the reply s.

I have a 2011 RK and a 1985 FXWG. If you can ride the Wide Glide, the Road King should be easier. It has a lower center of gravity and the anti-lock brakes are far more forgiving.

I have not yet gone to a dealer to test ride a Road King as I am not looking for a new one. I only want to go into debt for about 10 grand. I have had a few people who ride touring bikes tell me people who go from wide glides and sporty's to kings tend to lay them down. Is this something I should worry about or just BS? Most private sellers don't let you test ride. So I'm looking for opinions on that statement and year, and mileage in a Road King classic I should expect to get for 10 grand.

PS, I want to keep my FXWG!

I have a 2012 RKC, i find it very nimble, handles great. I was surprised how light the front end felt, but I was coming off a Street Glide with a fairing. A little more top heavy than my 06 Heritage but my 14" apes really helped. As for test rides get to a demo day at a local dealer. i know you're not buying new but a demo ride on a new RK or RKC will give you a general idea on the difference between your current ride. I would really look for 2009 or newer, many upgrades that are worth it. I have no idea about touring bikes getting laid down after riding Sportys and WG's, never heard that before. Good luck.

Went from a Wide Glide to an Ultra Classic. No problem. I actually think it is easier to ride wish I would have switched sooner. But then again I used to think Baggers were for old farts. How wrong I was.

Thats a nutty statement whoever told you that.
If you are an experienced rider you arent dropping your bike just because it is a little bigger than your wide glide.
My first Harley coming from a Kawi vulcan 750 was an 04 Road King Custom.

'I took my driving test on it, never been down, never even thought about it as harder to drive or handle.
Go to the girls only part of this forum and read around at all the ladies driving Road Kings and touring bikes like the Diva.

Lower center of gravity, better balancing, etc..
All you have to worry about is your Road king will be so much more comfortable that you wont want to stop riding it and you might start planning longer trips.

that's about it, you will buy more gas too as you will be riding it more.
Good luck, a Road king is a great bike in many ways.
Lump

PS Update

It is a good idea to use your local dealership to test drive a few bikes, look at there options and stuff, even look at their used bike.
You are going to use them for service at some point so I wouldn't worry about it.
You can also go rent one for the day.
Anyway it is a great market to buy so go drive one and go from there.
Wide glide is a great bike, but I think if you get an 06 or newer Road King you are going to be blown away at the ride.
