I have an 03 roadking classic. At around 60 mph, I hold the throttle steady and the bike sputters. I clalled local HD dealer and they want around $100 for a fuel filter. Before I spend the hundred, anyone got any other advise?
could be after 10 years you need a fuel filter, and possibly internal lines- no real surprise there.
when sputtering at 60, what happens if you whack open the throttle ?
more sputtering might indicate a fuel delivery problem...less sputtering or smoother operation might indicate the problem is elsewhere...spark timing which could be a crank sensor or other.
note the rpm at which it "sputters" what happens at that rpm in another gear?
IF you are headed to a shop to have them do the work, the more detailed your observations, the better chance they have of fixing.
Do not say 'change the fuel filter.." do say "at XXX rpms, my bike does XXX..."

When I had 5 Harleys they all sputtered...a bit.
NowI have 4 (one new) and they sputter too, but I know it's a matter of how bad the sputtering is.
How does your bike run under full throttle?
If it runs good at full throttle you're getting enough gas to run at cruising RPM's.
On my 2000 Ultra the sputter was especially bad so I tried fuel additives, sparkplugs, spark plug wires, a/c filter, intake seals, and a new TPS.
I gave up and took it to an indy.
Final solution was a new Engine Temperature Sensor, a new ECM (expensive) and a Stage II download.
I have a 2002 rkc. it started out with an occasional sputter, and progressively got worse until it wouldn't run at all. it ended up being a broken wire on an injector. check your injector wires.
Thanks everyone for their advise. A friend suggested Star Tron additive and it seems to have stopped the sputter. I hope it continues to be the answer!
