Wow...
It's all about "normal force" and friction. I can see a car tire with much more contact surface being able to do that.

The dealer's sales pitch is that they don't order Ultra Classic's in with ABS as an option because riders buying that type of bike don't want it. He went on to say that real riders not need it. Well I don't know if I'm a real rider yet as I've only be on the road for 40 plus years but I want to believe I have a pretty good handle on braking fundementals. I've found ABS to be valuable in panic stops or the wet & gravel as it does a much better job of preventing a lock up than I can.

So for those of you on the Electra Glide series (100 lbs heavier than my SG) what are your thoughts on the value of ABS?

Thanks
That dealer/salesman if full of sh--! He has an Ultra or three that he needs to unload. First, you know what ABS has done for your safety in the past. I ride a Harley for a living in every sort of weather, and my ABS does not activate often, but even the most experienced, highly trained riders cannot anticipate the unexpected: a car running a light or turning left abruptly that gives you only seconds to react and few options but to grab all the brake you can and hang on. The ABS on my '08 FLHTP literally saved my life at least once under such circumstances. When I was shopping for a new bike earlier this year ABS was a "must have" option for me.

Second, that's malarkey that people who buy Ultras don't want ABS. Simply not true, and being that it comes paired with the security system most people spending 23K on a bike WANT a security system. Most of the Ultras I'e looked at a in various Harley dealerships came equipped with security & ABS.

I like the extra security of ABS, but I think putting a car tire on the rear will serve you better than ABS will.

I bought a 08 street glide without ABS and after a short while I was wishing I had got ABS on it. Then I changed the POS OEM rear tire for an E3 and never even thought about ABS again.

Now I've got a Limited with a 205 car tire on the rear and I can't hardly engage the ABS. I had a teeny bopper girl pull out in front of me a couple of weeks ago. I stood up on the brake pedal and never engaged the ABS.
Obviously you've never low sided from front wheel lock up. Rear wheel lock up can be handled with training and keeping your head when it occcurs. No one stays up with front wheel lock up. ABS prvents that.

Your 40+ years of riding experience are to be respected, but you're off the mark here.

Sorry friend. As much as I'm a believer in ABS I've stayed up right on all front wheel lock ups I've ever had without ABS which I've had been a few.

I will never own another touring with out ABS

It is that good.

If I would have had it on my 2007 Street Glide I would still have that bike.

Respectfully the front wheel does not scare me. But rear wheel skid on a bagger is bad news.

Are you referring to a brief "chirp" on your front tire, or an honest to God front wheel lock up. If not, I'm calling BULLSHIT.

I guess when you come to sell the bike, the same dealer will tell everyone wants ABS and will knock down your trade in value.
