I just purchased my 1st Harley an 07 road Glide. After 2 weeks I stopped at the store 2 min tried to start RG to leave would not start acted like dead battery. So jump start noticed battery cable loose so I tightened it was ok for a couple days then happened again but would not jump start right away took a while. Note battery seamed to have plenty juice. So I really tighned battery cables. Then drove for 3 weeks including a trip to Orlando no problems. Then Friday got off expressway came to light 2 miles down the road down shifting engine died again acted like dead battery but was even harder to jump and battery seamed charged fine. So thinking cables again I used new locking washers and lockntight. Note after getting started ran rough and had to idle up at lights to keep running. Then drove for 2 days and tonight soon as I got off expressway down shifting to 1ST light died again. Same thing jumped to a truck would not start until truck was running same as last time. Also tried disconnected motorcycle battery completely to jump still acted like dead battery. Finally started with both connected and truck running. I am stumped. Please help my Harley introduction not going so well.
Could be anything?
Here's where my problems where:
A) Bad positive cable, frayed down at the starter connection where the cable meets the ferrule.
B) crushed stop switch wiring at the front brake handlebar clamp. My fault, didn't pay enough attention when reinstalling.
I read about jump starting but when you are on the side of the road? I did follow user guide tips. Don't connect negative to frame and disconnect immediately after start. I will Check cables but I still find it strange it acts like dead batt after shutting off Then started fine when I got it home. Coil maybe?
May be bad battery, I had one that checked fine would not even turn on light. Just happen to catch it at the right time and it checked bad then good. Terminal was broke loose inside of battery. Took a week of checking everything out, all wires, grounds, everything before it was found. Get a battery you know is good and try it. Good luck
Ok I had the electrical system checked every thing ok and ground was tight. So I went ahead and changed the battery even thou the old one showed full charge. And when I did I rode it hard on hwy to see if it would cut off when I exited it did not. But last night it did at the same spot only this time after I came to a stop it did re start without any problem. And again it acted like it was going to cut off at idle had to keep giving it gas to stay running. So now another suggestion was fuel issue so I put some FullThrottle I had in tank to hopefully help fuel and maybe water if there will see tonite but if this is not it don't know what to try next.
their is a big thread in here already,07 IDOL ISSUIES many of us 07 owners have had what u describe 2 common causes idol air controller and throttle position sensor.
