I just redid my internal wiring for new bars and everything seemed to go well. Hardest part of internal wiring for me was getting those pin connectors in and out of the sockets. What a PITA.
Anyways, go to start up bike this morning and everything seems fine but the yellow engine light stays on and the green cruise control light stays on and blinks. The bike will not rev up and seems to be in limp mode.
Could this mean an issue with the tbw wires? Im thinking maybe I inadvertently crossed a wire on the plug connectors? Hope nothing more than that because it would be a pain to pull all the wires back through the bars again.
I agree on check for codes. Had same issue when I installed my bars. Found TGS errors being thrown. The green 6 pin connector had come loose when I was pulling the wires through. I ended up soldering this connection and everything was a-ok after reassembly. Since there wasn't enough slack for me to get the TGS out without pulling the bars anyway, I figured no harm in soldering.
That was my big worry when I did mine but I put handmade diagrams with color coding for the molex connectors together or it woulda been a mess. I also bought a molex connector tool:
One of the wires is either broke or something happened....damn that sucks.
I had a similar issue installing mine. It was indeed the TBW connector. I originally tried running it inside the bars but somewhere inside it got caught and broke. I had to pull the TBW line out and cut the harness and match up the lines based on a diagram I got from the HD repair manual. I then put heat shrink on them and ran them back through individually. All works now. I have the PYO 10 inch apes.
That molex connector tool is pretty cool. I tried paperclip and didnt work so well. It was a late night last night and I took pics of all wires connected with plugs to go by and even hand write what colors go where.
But being it was late I may have overlooked something or maybe a wire broke at some point in bars. Gosh I hope it didnt break in bar. I originally wired monkey bars and now switched to reg apes and id hate to have to do it over again. Lets hope its just at the plug connector which should be an easier fix than pulling wires back through bars.
Man, really sucks as the bars look and feel so darn good I was chomping to ride to work today. have had good weather like this here in north central Florida since last year.
Thanks for info everyone.
After hearing all the horror stories about green TBW plug I spliced it and shrink wrapped. Here the color code matchup worked out great.
Next is to draw a diagram of the two ends of the green connectors so you know which wires to connect when we cut off the connector. HD has split the wires coming from the sensor into two group with two different color shrink wraps:Black and Yellow. I will now refer to these as Black side wires and yellow side wires. Each side has a white wire, black wire, and red wire. This is what it looks like:
Here is how the wires will hook up.
I spliced the green TBW connector it was just too tight in the bars even with the 1 1/2"...probably woulda been a disaster if I woulda tried mashing that F!@#er in there.
Got the Molex tool on ebay.....
Thanks for all the feedback guys and thanks acchd for the color code. I had taken pics and written down color connections but it was late and thought I might have missed something. So here what I found out when I got home from work.
Turned bike on and saw engine light and cc light stay on. No code flashing though. So turned her off and took off outer fairing. Started at tbw and low and behold the molex connectors were backed in almost flush with the lip of that plastic white piece inside the plug. I pulled the piece out then pulled each pin up more til it clicked in place, then put it all back together and all is good.
I was so thrilled I took her out for a little ride and man! Those 14" wild ones are amazingly comfortable. Night and day difference over the 13" prime apes i had. I am ecstatic and in love with my glide all over again.
I couldn't find poly bushings locally so Ill order some online and just install when they come in. Im thinking of maybe getting inner fairing painted sometime in near future so that might be a good time. If I planned this out better I would have had it painted while waiting for bars to come in, but Im not always that good at thinking ahead.
Thanks everyone for your feedback and help. Greatly appreciated. and Tucci, I may get that molex tool as well. Might be good to have in case I decide to get higher bars next year. ;-)
