Default Separating Muffler from Header Pipe

I can't get the muffler to separate from the header pipe. I have tried PB Blaster, heat, WD40.

In the photo it's the lower exhaust system that is being stubborn!

Any suggestions appreciated!

Gotta make sure the clamp is totally loose. Put a screw driver in it and force the ears apart till it rattles around.

Also, it is often a two person job. One pulls and twists, while the other taps with a hammer on the joint with a screw driver or chisel.

If you have a vise you can lock the head pipe in it using soft jaws, or rags and then using bar steel that you can find at a home depot, hardware store drill a hole it it the size that will allow it to be bolted to the hanger on the muffler. This will give you something to hold onto and twist with. The longer the better force you will have and apply the pb blast to the area around the connection. This always works for me.

03DragonRK,

I did bolt it to my work bench in a similar fashion as you described. The top is only 3/8" plywood and it was starting to flex so I stopped. I will give your method a try!

Thanks for the tip!

When you reinstall, use a dab of the silver antisieze and they won't be so stubborn next time. Also suggest using it on the exhaust flange bolts. You can pick it up at any auto parts store.

Try use a strap oil filter wrench for the twisting part. Works like a charm and didn't leave a mark on the pipe.
