I am going to have a big bore kit put in my 88tc, I bought my bike in June, is a 99 EG standard with 40k on it, the indy put new tensioners in it before I bought it so I thought I would do the big bore first then the cam upgrade kit later after the tensioners get worn down some, I can't to both at the same time due to cost. What big bore kits are out there that you guys recommend and what is a ball park cost including parts and labor.
Think this through and select a 'system" which works together- a kit if you will.
a collection of "parts" chosen by you over time may not complement each other.
A kit will ( or should) and save up so that you do it all at the same time- other wise you face duplications of labour and gasket costs. ( you coulda done cams and drive system at the same time for example for maybe $250 more)
I did stage 1 air kit, exhaust, SE tuner, and HQ 525 cams on my 08 Ultra Glide, 96ci. Made a big difference for $2800 installed. The service tech I deal with told me I would get a bigger bang for my buck by going this route over heads and big bore. Went in 69 hp, came out 86hp 98.8 ft. lbs torque.
I have an 2001 EGC and just put Andrews 21 cams. Better performance but I'm looking at going all the way. Big bore and have the heads done too. Should get close to 100 hp. I was going to just to the big bore, but to get it to really wake up I want the heads done two. I will be doing my own install so that should keep the price around $1500. I have a 45mm Mikuni carb I will be replacing the sock one. Big Bore is a good think but highly recommend cams too
If the original tensioners lasted for 40K, the new ones will probably go for 60k or better because the cam chains have been polished. If you do the mod's picemeal, you're going to spend a lot more money on labor including the cost of adjustable pushrods. The only "kit" you need for a big bore job is a set of Screamin' Eagle (SE)
flat top pistons, a top end gasket set (HD or Cometic), and someone to bore the cylinders. As long as you have the heads off you should have them ported, even though you won't get the full benefit until you replace the stock cams.
Ride it as is for a while and save money. While you are saving money do some research and keep an eye open for used parts. I picked up Andrews 26's and a V/H pro pipe for less then $400 on eBay and on this forum.
Just food for thought.
