My 01 Electra Glide was only getting 34 mpg. I pulled the plugs and noted the base of the plug was black. So I yanked the carb and found that the rubber mounting gromment that fits between the carb and intake had a rip in it. The fuel air mixture screw was out about six turns and a couple small "O" rings were shot. Hot it all back together and she fired right up. Now I have to see if the mpg's improved. She runs great!
If replacing intake seals consider replacing the entire intake manifold. Some aftermarket styles are greatly improved and boast improve gas mileage too.
