Gonna tear apart the Ultra this winter and paint it a flat or satin black. Should be something similar to a rat rod black...may lay some sort of dark red pinstriping or graphic. Has anyone painted their own before? Gonna use a lower cfm hvlp gun or mini gun. The devilbiss SRI Pro seems to fit the bill with a 9 inch fan pattern, low cfm requirement and good atomization.
This will be done in a garage booth, not a professional spray booth and will be my first major paint project. Anyone have any tips or know of any good motorcycle painting info on the net? Thanks in advance!
Do a google search on John Deere Blitz Black. I'm going to paint mine satin with this paint over the winter also. There are some good discussions on home painting out there. Good luck.
Hey Pumba...i actually found an entire forum dedicated to JD Blitz Black and was initially set on using it but read a ton of stuff about it being very difficult to repaint if you ever wanted to change colors, even after doing a ton of pre paint prep. Was leaning towards using a Sema 2k paint kit. The more i read the more confused i get, lol.
I was thinking about the basecoat / flat clear option too....any suggestions on which base and clear i should use? I like the idea of the extra protection a clear coat gives.

Go to any PPG auto paint store and tell them you want 9700 black base and DCU2060 clear. The 9700 base is the blackest black and the DCU2060 clear is pre flattened and matches Harleys denim.

I think this sounds like the best option.....being that I'm doing fairing, fenders, tank, lowers, bags, tour pack and side panels, how much do you think? 2 quarts? Any idea on total cost for materials? Thanks WF!
If you go with a quart of DBC base "the best one" and a quart of DCH2060 with hardner it will be around $250.00. It can be done for less but I wouldn't.
