For your best deal, call Jim Palmer at Kutter HD (608.314.1722). If you are sure you are going to buy it, I would go ahead and pull the trigger soon. There is no guarantee that it will stay the same price especially over the next couple of years if inflation gets out of control. But you are free to delay the purchase until the day before your warranty expires if you wish. If you wait until the warranty expires, you have waited too late. Your call.

For instance, you could get the 7 year plan now, so that would give you 5 more years past your 2014 expiration date. Remember that whatever plan you purchase always includes your first two years of factory warranty. And another important point....no need to purchase it from your selling dealer. Once you purchase the ESP, it is recorded in the HD system and you are good for ESP service at any HD dealership or service center. I paid $1688 for the 7 year ESP total around the end of April 2012 with Kutter and that included tire and wheel coverage.

Be aware that engine modifications are specifically mentioned in the ESP contract and could very well void the ESP for the motorcycle. (paragraph 15) Maintenance records may be required, so keep a list of your oil changes and other scheduled maintenance activity in case it is requested. The contract also has a nice list of stuff that is NOT covered...examples are speakers, frame, drive belt, battery, discoloration on the pipes, etc. It's a pretty big list and some of the stuff on it I have heard that others have been able to get that covered. So it will depend upon the dealer I suppose.

If you want a copy of the ESP contract, CNA National Warranty Corporation, send me a PM and request it with an email address. I'll send it in .pdf form so you can read it over before you decide to pull the trigger. Everyone has their reasons for either buying or not buying the ESP. Good to consider all the reasons, but at the end of the day, it's your decision and may very well save you tons of bucks down the road if something catastrophic happens to the engine. Then again, it may be the better part of $1700 up a wild hogs ***!

Just an FYI on engine and exhaust mods.

Per my contract 2013, Section 6 (non-covered conditions), paragraph 15: YOUR MOTORCYCLE if it has been modified with any alterations to the powertrain, the suspension (including tire or wheel size) and/or exhaust system not approved by Harley-Davidson.

Basically only H-D approved after market parts can to be use, they must be street legal parts. Read the information about any modifications you are going to make, if it's for offroad use only, it will not be covered.

I have never had a bike long enough to need the extended plan. If I got a bike I was going to own for a very long time and ride the wheels off fo, it may make sence. I put on about 15000 miles a year and trade every 3-4 years.

I would think you would burn through at least 2 sets of tires with the mileage you put on wouldn't it be worth it to extend yours for about 2 years?

I wouldn't pay over 50% of what there asking price is. The dealers make a boat load of coin on the ESP.

I have one that I have yet to use, but the piece of mind is there since I put on around 20-25k a year. My riding buddy bought one for his Fat Boy and now has tire only coverage on his CVO Street Glide. He has had a couple of flats replaced on the Fat Boy and just now had the swing arm replaced on the Fat Boy.

I wasn't aware that you could get tire only coverage, but apparently you can if the bike is new.

I have never had a dealer question the exhaust system or air cleaner mods. I am on my third Harley. I ride about 12,000 miles a year and have got my money back on every one. Make sure you understand the warranty. Most dealers in my area do not. Examples are the disappearing deductible, if you pay for a part to be replaced you never have to pay the deductible again. On a touring bike the headset and cord are covered, I go through about one cord a year and a headset every other year. Every time the dealer tries to charge the $50 deductible, you have to explain that you have paid for the repair before and there is no deductible. Lots of other items will most likely be replaced more than once in 84,000 miles and it adds up. Rental vehicles at $75 per day up to $750 and towing up to $200 per event are also covered. The only catch is you have to pay for them and then they will reimburse you. There is also trip interruption coverage. Make sure you read, understand and get everything this warranty covers.
