Try disconnecting the connector under the seat, you can trace the wires where they come through the rear fender. As it runs along the under side of the fender, the tire can tag it & wear through & short the wires. I was having a problem with the right turn light would come on when I hit the brake & that was where my problem was.

Default Short in your wiring to your running lights

I had at one time a bulb that was shorting out my system.
You might want to pull your rear light bulbs and replace them all if they lot at all corroded or have a burnt look to them.
Also check your wiring at all these points.

I would for the sake of argument, take the switch housing loose, it still could be a pinched wire in there, and it took a while to make the short. The relay can still click without the correct voltage.
