Had a detachable on my '03 RK, about the only time off was to wash the bike, now have the '12 RGU, seems to catch a lot of wind solo but I still use the storage area when I get to work or short rides for helmets, gloves, etc. so it will stay a permanent mount.

Oh Yeah-- big difference. Much more lively wthout the TP. (easier to pick up when tipped over as well! )
I might be a little late to this party, but I put the detachable kit on my 09 black ultra and love it. It's like a totally different riding bike. having said that, I put the tourpac back on. Reason? I do a lot of long trips or over nighters and I find it easier to just keep the tourpak on for the extra stuff.
Also, wen figuring in cost, add the cost of a new, low profile seat. My 09 stock seat looked sort of frumpy without the tourpak, imo. You can do it all yourself too. pretty straight forward.
past performance cannot predict future results. your results may vary.
My general rule is if I'm travelling for more than 3 days the TP goes back on for the trip. Less than 3 days I don't need any more room.
This is based on more than 3 days away I'm probably going 'further afield' where dealers are few and much further apart so need space for more tools, cleaning stuff, varying sets of clothing for differing climates etc.
Yep, I did the Deutsch also. The only way to go. But DO NOT simply cut the antenna and CB wires unless you are aware of how you are going to splice them. And if you do know how to splice them, please tell me because mine are still cut in two.
I used BNC male connectors with a double female between them as I didn't have a cable mount male BNC. Be VERY careful with the AM/FM coax as it is a weird cable with a hair like center connector. and very difficult to use with a BNC. I don't know if they make a connector for that cable or not.
That said, in the three years since I did it, I have removed the pak twice. The bike looks, rides, and handles better without the tour-pak but I sure miss it when it's off.
I used the Fat Bagger Inc. on my 09 Ultra kit which is about $250 Plus Kuryakyn tail lights and a hidden antenna in the fairing. I coiled the wires behind the right side cover. I also use a Street Glide seat when the Tour pack is off.
I did buy the connectors for the wiring but never install them, as I only used the tour pak for traveling or when the old lady goes for a ride. I never miss the back speakers or the tour pack lights.
The FBI kit is very clean doesn't shows when the tour pack is off. When I bought my 2013 Electra Glide classic I just put the 09 back to original and use the kit on it.

I have my wires coiled under the seat. Did you coil all your wires up into the one side cover? Was it a tight fit? I never thought about putting them there. Sounds like a better idea.
Well, the connectors and the crimping tool came in. Finsihed up the disconnect for the tour-pak lighting and the speakers. The red connectors are new (still need to clean it up a bit). I used three 6-pin connectors, one for each of the speaker housings, and one for the tour-pak. My tour-pak has 5 wires, 2 of them are for the aux 12V power port in the trunk and 3 wires for lights.
