gotta admit that rusty bolt would **** me off too....now that you have seen it its the first thing you see walking up to your scoot...touch up paint (black) with a tiny brush and all will be well with the world
oh dammit, I know I shouldn't have been reading these forums. I should just go ride.
But I did, now I am screwed.
The bike in question is a 07 Road King. 40K miles. everything seems good, but I have been noticing that it had a slight clunk/bang when starting, even cold starting. However, riding there is no noise, taking off from a stop, no noise, no clunks or primary noise at all, expect when starting, one quick bang as she fires. Well, that is unless you lug the engine hard, then everything sounds a little clunky, but who would lug the engine?
Do I need to change this compensator?
LOL, I found the post with the heim joints mod, gonna hit the Ace tomorrow and see if I can get the parts to do the mod, then maybe some extras in the tool bag.
This is my first big twin. I have ridden BMW's for 30 years. last summer I got a hankering for a sportster so I bought an old Ironhead. It was fun, but it was a death trap.
That made me buy a 2005 XL1200, that made me buy this 2007 Road King... haven't thought about BMW's in awhile, been enjoying the cushy ride too much.
But, I do have a lot to learn about these things.
Prolly. When it starts to grind on hot start ups then its time cause the compensator killed the starter clutch.
This isn't for everybody. I place a wet paper towel under the bolt. Then I dip a Q-tip in a small amount of muriatic acid. Dab it on the bolt and let it work for a few minutes. Then rinse it off with a little water from a spray bottle once the rust is completely gone. Dry it off and paint it with clear nail polish or leave it as is. I do the same on those chrome sockett screws that get rusty down in the center. Keeps them looking new. Like I said, not for everybody and not for use on every screw. Muriatic can be nasty stuff.
Man that cant be a HD.... ***** G. or any of his family before him would EVER allow a bolt to be put on their fine bikes that would rust like that... Would They??? :-)
Dont look at it...Problem solved. I have never heard anyone say OMG look at that rusty bolt.
I have a 10 street glide I come out of store back in 09 right after I got the bike. This guy was looking at the new bike and his first comment to me was how crappy the bolts looked. I already had thought the same thing to myself before I bought the bike. I have bolts I have taken off 3 bikes now dating from 1996 the newer ones are the worst.
