Default Fuel Tank Lid

Hello to all! I have a question. A couple of months ago I purchased my very first Harley...A 2012 Electra Glide Ultra Limited (FLHTK) and I absolutely love the bike with only 1 exception...that ugly chrome dome fuel lid/cover. After washing the bike several times and really studying the beauty of this machine, there is one detail that I think the motor company fell short on. The brushed aluminum cover with chore accents and the Harley Bar and Shield that adorns the timing cover captures the meaning of this bike. The same detail is on the transmission that simply reads "Six Speed". It's also on the air filter housing "103". Why wouldn't they continue and bring the same detail to the fuel fill lid? If you ask me, the Bar and Shield that's on the timing cover along with the horizontal chrome lines belongs on the fuel lid. Does anyone know if this is an available option somewhere on this Earth? I've checked just about everywhere including the Motor Companies parts catalog and came up empty. There are dozens of medallions that I can add to it but that would mean changing out the timing and derby covers as well. All of the available themes are okay if you're into that sort of thing but to keep it clean and beautiful I think that the O.E. badging is the way to go. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your time.

Send your suggestion to the MOCO. They are always looking for ideas which will separate people form $250 to $300. I'm not familiar with the hinge arrangement so have no idea how hard it would be to change covers.

Buy a blank one (from a SG) and have someone etch in the design you want. There are a few businesses who do this. Goggle it.....

When I bought my 2009 Ultra Classic two months ago all the covers were the Live to Ride and Ride to Live design in all silver. I put the gold trim Live to Ride and Ride to Live fuel tank lid to replace the smooth chrome one and it looks great. Since these covers are not exactly next to each other it looks very good and not unbalanced at all. It was very easy to install. I would also get the push button key lock for the tank. Love mine.

there are all kinds of options to say "this is my bike", and as above the dealer will be happy to relieve you of a heavy wallet, various replacements have been offered over the years.
traditionally the dash has been an area of brightwork left unadorned so that the eye follows the tank lines without stopping.

1.) anything that says "live to ride" usually says "this is my first Harley"

2.) the pushbutton release is junk and can jam or fall apart, leaving the rider with no easy way to fill up other than remove the dash panel ( so carry tools) on a late model- on earlier models the dash could not be removed unless the door was open.

I bought a fuel cover off Ebay that matches the color of my bike. It looks good me thinks.

I like you idea. I'll give it a look see. The standard skulls and born to ride themes just doesn't appeal to me. I'd like to keep it clean and simple. That huge chrome dome in my opinion was a huge miss for the MOCO.

Same goes for later models. You can't take off the dash unless the door is open ...... to take off the gas cap.

Corrected, thanks-

i learned my lesson on my evo.

800 miles from home, only gas station for 100 miles getting ready to close...

Good thing I had a feeler gauge set, was able to make a "slim jim" and release the catch after about 40 minutes.

a brass set pin in the pushbutton latch had vibrated out and the linkage fell apart.

I don't know why some people think it is so much trouble to use the key on the fuel door. Having heard of so many problems with the push buttons makes the choice even more clear - keep the key lock.

I agree with the "live to ride=first harley". Sooner or later even newbies realize that too, then take it all back off.
