Hello I got a 05 Ultra with around 25,000 miles on it. I know its getting close with the chain tenisors going bad so I'm going to replace them. I know to use a gear drive I have check the crank run-out. Went to a indy shop and got a price quote and here it is....
Gear Drive S&S 510's kit
Adjustable Push rods
High Performance springs kit
Commander V Tuner
Labor
For a total of 1650.00
My question is do you think its a fair price? I know I can save some labor by doing the work myself which would save about 400.00. Any help or ideas if this is the set up I should use or a different cam. My rpm range is between 2000-3300 99% of the time with about 80/20 solo/two up.
usually adjustable pushrods are used to save the labor costs of pulling the heads.
if they are pulling the heads for springs, can't they reuse the stock pushrods ?
adjustables are fine, but they can go out of adjustment and the rider/owner needs to be able to recognize and remedy on the road.
how about lifters, replacing those would be wise. ( check lifter blocks for wear)
no comment on the cam choice
while many riders here have good results with the PCV ( often with the help of fuelmoto), my experience with local riders with PCV's is that their results are often not great.
The key is in the set-up, if set on the PCV, ask the indy about buying if through fuel moto so that you have on-going support.
On the cams it depends on your riding style. The 510g cams are more in the upper end for riding on the freeway. They do come in handy for that and I love them. They run in the 3000-5500 rpm range.
Sounds like you would be more interested in the 509. They run in the Idle-4500 rpm range.
The price seems fair. When I had this done it was about 3k with a new cam plate and oil pump from fueling. That was about 1k extra in parts and then mine actually went so they had to take the oil pan off and clean out the sludge and plastic.
Thanks guys for the input. I'm good with a wrench so I may just do it myself and at least save some labor cost. Plus I called S&S and talked with tech support and they recommend the 509 and dont have to upgrade the springs
You can do it if you are handy with tools...take your time triple check everything...Bag and mark your parts....take bictures while you are dissasembling...clean, clean, clean...Plenty of assembly lube...I did mine on my 07 but now may be tackling my just acquired 02 FXDP...The only thing i may let somebody do is pressing the bearings in the cam plate if they look bad?
I say do it yourself and check your cam choices, you could save a good coin...

I've run gear drive cams for years on different builds and currently have them in my 120r. With that said, I personally would not run them without a welded/plugged crank as I once did and the crank scissored and I ended up with a destroyed motor.
If it were me I would use the HD upgrade kit which allows you to use the newer hydraulic tensioners with the better oil pump. They are more forgiving of crank runout and the upgrade is most likely cheaper.
