Default '91 FLHS Fairing Ideas

New member as well as HD owner! I have a 91 FLHS that I would like to take the windshield off of and put a "shark nose" on. Does anyone have any ideas as to what year will fit, tips, hints etc. I appreciate any help!

if you get a period correct "tour glide" fairing then all your instruments will mount up.

the tour glide was the earlier version of the road glide- the fairing is kinda the same...but you'll want to look at fabbing up mounts- for one the RG fairing is mounted at a different angle than the TG fairing

the reason you don't want to go "all new" is that nothing will mate up, the speedo on your bike is cable driven from the front wheel- the past almost 20 years it is from the tranny- electronic sensor.

so many, many changes.

some convert the FLHS to a road king look, that may be easier.

the other fairing option would be the FXRP/FXRT style, again mounts and instruments

what may mount up pretty easy is a batwing type fairing for a road king--- check with memphis shades...unclip windscreen, mount up batwing and done. no electrical nothing, just ride

Thanks MK. With the Tour Glide, you said instruments will mount up. Is that in the same location on the handlebars or will they actually mount in the fairing? I've seen posts on here with the shark nose, and the speedo and tach look like they are still on handlebars, while radio etc. is on/in fairing.

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. I have had my 1990 FLHS from new and as you can see below have a batwing on it now, off a shovel.

I bought a take-off batwing many years ago and investigated installing it. It had the correct cable driven speedo etc, however marrying the wiring to my bike was so daunting I gave up, hence my shovel batwing (no instruments in it). Harley made an FLHS kit using the same batwing for a while.

As Mike points out, using a fairing from a bike that had a cable-drive speedo is your best bet. An FLT will bolt right on, but the wiring will be a challenge, unless you find that sort of stuff easy!

We have a couple of members who have installed the fixed fairing, who hopefully will pass by before long. Essentially it depends on your skills and determination. Harley made far fewer bikes when your bike and mine were made, so they had dedicated wiring harnesses, not modular ones that can be easily adapted.

Thanks gr, I like the look of yours with the batwing! The shark nose is growing on me as well. I don't mind keeping the guages where they are, my main purpose is to put a radio/speakers in and dress up the bike from the windshield.

Default Batwing

FYI... I believe you can still purchase the original batwing like that of grbrown (PN 58198-76A) . Adventure HD for one, but you can still pick up at swap meets for great savings. When I had this fairing years ago, I used to listen to tunes with a system built by a company called Radiocad, I believe (long time ago). I'll bet you can pick up one of these units at a swap meet as well, and then put your own radio and speakers in. Actually I miss these old fairings - simple, light and functional. Meant to do one job; block the wind, bugs and rain. Good luck in your search.

Wink

This is mine, from behind. There were radio mounts for this style, as ftzoid mentions, I have even seen one with a couple of gauges, in a pod presumably mounted off the uprights that hold the batwing.

A further alternative is an aftermarket batwing. There are several, aimed at the RK crowd, that may fit, also take a radio etc. There are a few threads about them somewhere.....

This is one.
