Chunker> Glad you kept it upright and made it safely home! I live on a 10,000 acre cattle ranch in a very rural portion of central florida, and ride VERY little after dark. Deer everywhere, hogs, and in the cooler winter months (like now) more coyotes running the roads as well, along with all the smaller stuff like Racoons, Armadillo's, Possums, Skunks......
One of my biggest fears, is hitting an animal at night out here in the middle of no where, no one ever seeing me especially if I was off the paved roadway off in the woods, and never getting help out here, if I was injured.
That would really sux!
Be thankful glad your ok, and fixing your bike will be a breeze!
Many, many years ago(think it was around when the Pyramids were being built..hah) I hit a dog that would pull the same stunt with me riding a peddle bike. Never thought much about it because he would run right along side of me and I think he enjoyed it. One day his timing was off an he ran right in the front of me and I ran right over him. Needless to see I went flying over the front of the bike. The dog ran back to his home yelping to the high heavens. I got up with a couple of scrapes on me and bent front rim. That ended that dogs days of chasing me because when I'd pass by that house again he would bark at me but never came to chase me.
PS I could tell ya how we use to deal with dogs that came chasing after cars but PETA would not be too happy :-)

I hit a dog last year and went down hard. $9,000.00 damage to bike. I had some minor injuries but the cops charged the dog owner for not having the dog on a leash or chain and their home owners insurance had to pay out some big bucks. Check into it. You should not have to turn it in on your insurance. They are responseable for the damage.
One of the disadvantages to living in a rural area with few rules is no real leash laws and no enforcement of others. I reported it to the insurance and state police. Police don't become involved in collisions with animals unless there is other property damage. I might look in to repairing the parts with plastic epoxy if it isn't damaged too much. Otherwise I'll get a new lower. I'll end up eating the cost.
It's a motorcycle not a display item. Things gonna get dinged some.
BTW, AL kicking ND ***.
I appreciate the comments on here. Things sure can happen fast. I knew that and this reinforces it. Still going to ride though.
Last summer middle of the night i came across a bridge at 60mph and a family of coons came out in a staggered line and ill be danged every single one of them went under my bike. It was horrendous. thump went the mother under the front tire then thump thump thump went the kids under the bike. nothing i could do but hang on and keep the throttle going.

Let the cops do their job. You very well might have to turn it into your insurance company and that sucks! If it can be avoided, by all meens!
Glad you didn't go down!
I hit a dog once...night time and foggy, seen this brown box on the road, swerved to go around it and wouldn't you know it....the box grew legs and ran right in front of me. when i hit it, my left leg slipped off the foot-peg and ended up underneath the bike. i was sideways on the bike like a Indian riding his horse. no idea why the rear wheel never caught my leg, but never went down....got back on top and was real happy about that. had a V-max at the time which was 1 week old with basic insurance. could have been real expensive.
sorry to say but I afraid you'll regret telling your insurance company. even though it cost them ZERO they will charge you with an accident and raise your rates. insurance companies suck...
