Riding home on a 2 lane country road and I see a large white dog come running out at me from the left side. Doing around 50 and swerved some to the right and hit it with the engine guard, fairing lower and foot peg. My left foot was partially on the peg and foot-board, and was knocked back to the board. Bike stayed upright only wavered a bit but I heard a loud yelp when it hit. I turned around to see what was going on and the dog wasn't there. It was dark so it might have made it to the ditch but couldn't see it. Several houses around and people let dogs run loose. Never had a problem with any wanting to chase me before.
When I went back, found part of the broken lower in the road. Short angled peg was pushed into lower scratching it and front cap broken off. It's dark and light not good in the garage so can't tell if there is any engine guard damage. Everything in the back looks OK but will check in the morning. Deductible is 500 so not sure if the insurance will cover any of it. Wonder how much a Merlot lower is?
Go back and find the owner, contact animal control. I bet the dog should have been on a leash. Get the owner to pay.
If you approach the people let them think you are worried about the dog, not that there was damages.
I believe you insurance will require that it be reported as well.

Just call the cops and let them handle it. People might blame biker and get hostile. These days, some people won't accept responsibility.
Not all areas need or require a leash law. Dogs chase s*it all the time, it's what they do. Just happens to blow nuts when it's on a bike. I would approach the owner though at the very least let them know what happened.
