Default 07 FLHT no start issues

My 2007 FLHT is not starting...rode it to a gas station shut it off...rode it two more miles and stopped again but this time no starting. Checked the battery at autozone..checks good...battery and starter are six months old. My question is could it be a voltage regulator or even a switch issue and is there ways to troubleshoot these items...positive and negative leads look corrosion free...i have the service manuals for this bike but dont know where i should look first after the battery.

Could be the kill switch. Try toggling it off and on a few times. Sometimes rust forms on the contacts.

I have written on how the starting system works- and understanding that makes for easier troubleshooting-

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...your-bike.html

for quick 'getting out of trouble'...the GREEN wire which connects to the solenoid carries signal from the starter switch/relay/wiring/etc. to the solenoid.

you can JUMP a wire from the battery + to this terminal and start the bike. for some of us, we have the battery tender plug right there...an 8" piece of wire will do.

so that'll get you going.

take the time to figure out the starting system... the charging system has NOTHING to do with your problem if the battery tests good- completely unrelated.

welcome to the forums

Mike

Does it turn over?
Do you have security?
Both of these affect what direction to go.

I too have an 07 and I remember a service bulletin that indicated the need to re torque the starter leads including the ground lead. I would start it and take off and at a gas station or whe ever I stopped, it just would not start. I re torqued the hot and ground leads and have not had the problem again..! It's worth a shot ..!

when i try to start it i get the clicking sound which i assume is the silonoid trying to make contact .....cleaned the pos and neg leads at battery....also cleaned neg at the block but no go....put a multimeter on one end on the positive lead at battery and touched the other to the engine block and got 12 plus volts...thinking though it must be a cable issue some where...will try to clean the positive cable at the starter too...although i believe it shows 12 volts as well...

hmmm, so load test of battery is good ?- what you describe is usually low battery.

then the solenoid may be the problem.

if you have had a weak battery in there before the solenoid contacts could be worn or pitted or covered with carbon-

rebuilding is easy, it is same process as on a chevy.

your results will vary widely hot/cold. meaning that you get an easy start if the bike is cold, but the starter seems 'weak' if the bike is hot ( this usually means you have bad cable connections or 2ndly weak battery)

try a jumper wire from the battery + to where the green wire attaches on the solenoid.

if it zips right into action, then you want to look first at the starter relay- any auto parts store relay will work there, take the old one to autozone and have them replace with same type

Had the same problem on my 07. Take a wooden dowel or a hammer handle. Hold it to the starter bolts and give it good rap. That will sometimes solve that problem. Check the starter mounting bolts for tightness. Fixed mine for a long time until I traded for a 2012!

There is a crank sensor at the front of the motor, on the bottom by the oil filter.
If this one goes it won't start. It's fairly common too. My bud's went and had to get it towed, last thing you'd think of.
