Love those fatty's!! Looking to upgrade to a 21" wheel myself. Short answer: You can usually throw a 21" on with no other mods. You may need to adjust your stock fender. Also may want to lower your forks but not absolutely needed. A 23" requires a new fender, probably a raked fork and other suspension mods. Too much for me, but a nice look!
21 was easy, fit right on and more importantly ride wasnt compromised that Ive noticed at all. I heard a 21 will change the ride characteristics dramatically, but it didnt. I also lowered the front an inch in trying to keep factory frame geometry with the road. I say if you want a 23, get a 23. Just need to do a little more mods which means more money.
A 23" requires more work but a rake kit is not absolutely required. Regardless, it is a lot more work to do the 23" for the extra 2". You must ask yourself if it is worth it to you. You will need a new fender as well for the 23". The bling factor will be much greater with a 23".
I put a 21 on mine. There are some that have needed to drill out the rear mounting holes a bit bigger to rock the stock fender forward slightly for clearance as the tire will expand some while going down the road. I taped a quarter inch nut to the tire and spun it and there was no rubbing so i didn't even do that. So the 21, on my road king, was litteraly just a wheel swap. It does raise the front end a bit, but i kinda like that personally, other than it leans over a bit farhter on the kick stand. A 23 will require significantly more work and money i'd imagine. And yes, the mammoth spoke wheels look fantastic. Changed the whole bike.
The 21" will raise the front of your bike about 1 1/4" therefore the 23" will raise it about 2 1/4" as you measure from the center of the wheel meaning it is 1" bigger on each side of the axle.
