I have post several times about trying to do a stage one on a budget. I have finally decided to start. Having a pipe decatted, and i am going to run stock mufflers for now with stock air cleaner. I don't want to add a tuner right now if i don't have to. I have been reading on these Vied's. That sounds like the thing i need. Can anyone tell me if there are any problems running these? Is there any advantage from the fixed or variable vieds? Will this combination of decatted pipe, stock mufflers, stock air cleaner and vieds be ok. I will add aftermarket slip ons and new air cleaner later. Need some advice. Thanks
You will be fine..First Id get the heavy breather filter...Then clean out the pipes and throw a muffler in there and keep the baffle in it.. Other wise you will get pops and backfires without the baffle... Stage one is just a high flow air system and exhaust...The fuel pack or power commander tunes this out nice for its highest performance peak...good luck! Under 250 you can have the intake and mufflers..
I run xieds ( for my 09) work great, as advertised and the cost is right.
for your air cleaner, if really on a budget, you can hole saw in the sides of the plastic backing plate and increase air flow quite a bit- just cut in the area outside the filter.
bang for buck air cleaner is the ness big sucker, about $115 on ebay from easternpc

The advantage of the ViED's is that you can adjust them.
The Plug-n-Play FL-ViED-10 richens the Air Fuel Ratio from14.6:1 to a range of14.3-13.9:1 in closed loop mode.
The XiED is set at a fixed 14.0:1
You don't say which year bike you have. You can read all the specs and fitment for different years and models HERE.
They work well with stock A/C and pipes, they also work well with Stage 1 A/C and slip-ons.
I have been running this set-up for years with no problems.
I would recommend the FL-ViED-10, depending on your cat removal and slip-ons, that model sometimes runs better at not quite as rich as the FL-XiED-10 is set at.
Below is a chart on how easy it is to adjust the FL-ViED-10's
