Would you trade

I have a 05 rg in great condition but have my eyes on a 09 sg the only problem is the sg is 4 years newer but has close to 40 k miles.. They have around the same upgrades and the same condition.

Which one rides nicer?
How much money will it cost you to upgrade to the newer 09?
Can you afford it?
These are the questions that I would asking myself.

The 09 will have the newer frame etc. but does it have ABS or anything else that your current bike does not?

I would never trade a shark for a bat. Maybe trade fairings too in order to get the new frame....

I think the new larger frame came out in 2010.

Different engines.

I think it depends on how satisfied you are with your current ride.

Another consideration is whether you do your own work or not.

At first blush I'd keep what I had.
