Default Let the games begin!

So after deciding on buying a new Ultra Classic, the shopping begins in earnest. Found a blue/black 2012, no price given yet. Another dealer will sell me a 2013 Vivid Black for 23k out the door. What's a good offer for the '12? What will the dealer try to tag on in the business office, and should I really consider extended warranty, or service packages, or?

Thanks for any feedback. Just want a GOOD fair deal.

A "good deal" is all subject to opinion and on the forums EVERYBODY gets a better deal it seems like.

As for your question on pricing for the '12 I would start by looking at the popular Kelly Blue Book and NADA websites and get a feel for what pricing is from trade, retail, private sale and offer somewhere in the middle of trade and retail.

As for what the dealer is going to try to tack on; that can very from dealer to dealer. My local dealer use to tack on a $350 salesman fee, saying that was the salesmanship commission. Depending on how bad a dealer wants to move a bike will help when you push back to have fees like freight, setup removed and any BS fee that may be on the quote. What ever you do, read every line with a $ figure BEFORE you sign on the line.

As for extended warranties, that all depends on how long you plan to keep the bike and how you negotiate it into the final sale price. If you only plan on having the bike two years an extended warranty is a waste on a new bike. I negotiated what I thought was a great deal ($600) on a 3 year unlimited mile warranty on my bike (2008 FLHX) when I bought it. But I negotiated that into the sale AFTER I worked them down to what I thought was a fair price for the bike first. Then when it came time to finalize the deal I insisted they remove the $350 BS fee. I figure the salesman's commission comes from the sale price of the bike.

Good luck on your game playing.

Don't worry about an extended warranty on a new bike. You have two years to figure out if you want/need one. And usually purchasing it from selling your dealer is not the best deal. There are a couple of really good low priced CNA warranty vendors around. Does not matter where you purchase the warranty...it's good anywhere.

If you get a 2012, make sure they have performed the voltage regulator recall on that bike if it's vin was affected by the bad batch of regulators.

Also consider the mods you will be doing. Dealer may not warranty things they feel mods may have contributed too. I agree with low country joe, wait on warranty.

You didn't say what options the bikes have...that can sway your decision and the price.

$23K out the door is a good price for a '13 if it has ABS and Security.
I'd think the '12 should be less. If you can pick it up for $21K - $22K out the door you would have a good deal. Again, it depends on options like ABS and Security.

FYI - I did the same thing in Sept '10. I picked up my Ultra as a left over '10. The dealer had 4 '10s (2 Ultras & 2 Limiteds) on the showroom floor and a warehouse full of '11s he wanted on the floor. Mine has the black/silver color combo and ABS but no security. I got a smoking deal on it and added security at the 1,000 mile service.

I've never bought the extended warranty and so far have never needed it. HD makes pretty reliable machines from the factory.

Good luck and post some pics when you get your new bike home.
