I've had apes on my bike sence the sixtys. I've allways heard and felt that anything above shoulders is showing off. When your arms are above the shoulders, thw weight of your arms will pull down and your arms and shoulders will start to hurt. Stay between the elbows and shoulders, and you'll be fine.
Be sure to ask who ever you buy your bars from for the exact measurement from bend to bend. Not all are what they say they are. HCC's 14" bars measure 16" from bend to bend, I know because I have them on my bike now. I questioned them and they stood behind there measurement even though it was 2 inches different. Just ask and there want be any surprizes.

I'm using 16s from LA Choppers. I'm 6' with a 32 inch inseam. The 16s put my wrists right at my shoulders. Extremely comfortable for me!
