Default 2006 Engine upgrade

I would like to get the most out of my 88 and I have heard about the 95 big bore kit or to use screaming eagle heads. What is the best option and can you use both and what is the biggest you can go with an 88?

the 95" is a popular and reliable upgrade.

there is also head work ( from various sources ) and cams.

the best choice would be a "package" of parts which are engineered to work together - not all parts complement each other- heads designed to work at high rpm are a wasted expense if the cams are designed for low rpm power

start asking around for recommendations from performance shops- let them know the limitations of your budget, expectations for power, need for reliability and MPG as all these factors are a balancing act.

all these procedures leave the bottom end cases intact, the next step is to split the cases and get a new lower end which would allow longer stroke ( the 96" is a stroked 88 ( same bore) , the 103" is a stroked 95- same bore again)- and beef up the lower end bearings, flywheel etc.
which increases cost even more.

so really, figure out your budget first. it is possible to spend 2, 5, 10 or 15,000 thousand dollars on a motor- it depends how deep you wanna go.

I ride with a lot of guys that have the 103 and I would just like to keep up with them. I am just looking at the best option for a tighter budget so maybe a couple thousand at the most.

a 98 kit from hillside, GMR, HQs S&S (97) and Fuel Moto -- will get in the front of the pack

On an 06, you already have good flowing heads, I would not change the heads. I would consider sending them off and having some street porting done to them. There is not going to be a lot of difference between a 95 and 97 inch kit. The cams and heads will give you the best power gain. There are lots options when it comes to tuners, but on an 06 I would go with a ThunderMax, with autotune. Have O2 bungs installed in your pipes, its cheaper than getting new pipes.
