Default 2008 Ultra Classic

Good Morning Gents!

New to the HD world but have been lurking for the last couple weeks. Seems like a great community here with tons of great information.

Just wanted to ask if there are any issues specific to this year and model I should be checking for? The bike has 11k miles on it with a big bore kit and Vance & Hines exhaust. Seller is asking $13k. Seems fair but could I get it for less?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!

Rad

08's had a few minor tech tip and recall issues, but nothing major and probably nothing that the original owner hadn't already taken care of. The compensator and inner primary bearing would be the biggest thing to look at.

You're going to hear a lot of people tell you what a "bad deal" that is for a five year old bike, but I don't think it's bad at all. As long as it's clean and the mileage is accurate I think that's a pretty decent deal. A lot of people will also tell you to find an '09 or newer bike because of the design change (supposedly it handles better). But I ride an '08 and love it. It may be because I haven't ridden a newer bike to compare it to, but I guess ignorance is bliss, because I love my '08! Bottom line is if it feels good, and you like the bike, buy it and ride the hell out of it! Good luck.

Do you think the big bore kit would have taken care of this?

Not unless they put in an SE compensator. The compensator is a weak link as is the stock tensioner which can lead to inner primary bearing issues.

I bought my 08 Ultra used about a year ago and have put about 8K miles on it. Great bike with no issues at all.

The more time you spend in here, the more horror stories you will hear! There is nothing on a Harley someone in here hasn't already fixed and none of them are as bad as some make out. The 08 models are a transitional year, first with the 6 gallon tank and metric wheel bearings, no doubt other things as well, but if you like the bike it is difficult to see why you shouldn't buy it.

Ask for details of recalls and it's service history, which between them should identify if things like an SE compensator have been done. If it is a private sale the owner will probably happily talk about things like that. It is always a good idea to take a friend with you, as they will see and hear things you miss!

At 13k sounds fair for a $21,000 bike with 2 to 3k worth of motor work. Do ask what tuner was used. If it is a dealer download then there is nothing to get. If it was the screaming eagle pro super tuner you need to get the tuning box with it. Most others are piggy back style.

Ask for receipts if its a private seller.

Bring cash.... Most people will not want to turn away a fist full of 100's

70,000 miles on mine and I still love it. Of course I have done many mods to it over the years including a big bore, cams, exhaust, tuner, etc, etc. All done because I wanted them, not because it was in need of them. Oh and mine was one of the rental fleet when I bought it with 13k on the clock when I bought it 4 years ago.

I have an 08 and have not had any problems with it at all. I agree that if you like the bike buy it and ride it like you stole it.
