Alright, Vance and Hines people. I've got the slash down basics on my Road King. They sound great, but they don't have a lot of volume (to me anyway). I know some of you have removed packing or shortened the baffles, etc.
I like the deep tone that I'm getting, and I don't want to increase the pitch if I don't have to.
I just received my set of V&H Basics. When I looked inside them I thought they were straight pipes! Had to use a flashlight to see what little baffling they haveattached to the muffler walls, but they are open from end to end. Only way to make them louder would be to take the "baffles" out. Not much there to start with!
I agree you do not have many options if you want to keep your current set up besides removing the current baffles completely. I suggest something along the lines of the V&H Big Shot true duals if you decide to change exhaust systems, they are louder than your current set up but not overbearing, at least IMO. I was told by a V&H tech rep that the dB difference between the Basic slip-ons and the Big Shot duals was about 6-7dB which is in the range of 20-30% louder.

Yeah, I know. You'd think they'd really talk, but I can't even hear the bike running at speed. They're great at idle or when I'm on the throttle, but they lose their charm when they clam up on the road.
do this...remove the baffle...cut it and reweld the two cone caps together for a shorter baffle...i have run just the cone cap and its LOUD & DEEP...my best sound was when i sawed out 4" of the non-holed section of the middle(gotta leave the holes for gas to vent) and rewelded the two making a shorter baffle...you need the front one on to hold the packin in, also it directs the exhaust into the baffle...when i ran it with no front cone it was loud but produced a small whistle til it warmed up...after reworkin it replace the packing ... i run and love my Basic Slash V&H

As you can tell I have the full set-up and I did notice the difference when at speed.. It does sound better with the duals.. That would be my suggestion.. I have had to turn the radio up a notch just to hear it (the radio that is). Great sound and not to over powering. Loud at take off and then turns to a nice rumble at speed.. Then when you go under a bridge or next to a wall then the chill bumps start... And you realize Hay!! That is me making all that noise and you give it more gas to hear it better....

What a sound.. I LOVE A HARLEY....
I'm thinking about putting a Fullsack kit on it this summer. These things just don't sound "right" with the balance pipe and all.
Evertime I take off on mine I think "This thing sounds like a damned Shadow."
