thanks for the responses guys. always helps the motivation stay high.
got about 3 hours of work in this afternoon. even got the wife back out there! now i'm out of brownie points.
went and picked up my wheels and new tire on the front rim. also pulled the cam cover to inspect the tensioner pads. was very relieved to see they were in great shape. so they must have been replaced in the last 5-10k miles. couldn't tell if the cams were aftermarket. there were no markings on the end of the forward cam. so i guess they're stock. buttoned it back up with a new gasket and called it good.
then tore down the tail section of the bike to get a solid look at what i was dealing with. was pretty much what i expected. some paint flaking in the corners and tube ends. and 99% of it came off with some solvent and a wire brush. broke out the grinder with a sanding wheel on it and started knocking it all off. i'll finish it up tomorrow with scuffing up the stock paint and then seal it with rust inhibitor.
hope to get off work a little earlier tomorrow and get some more done
outside tensioner. couldn't get a pic of the inner one. but it's the same
wife got her workout with the drill and the powerball to clean up the front rim
tore down the back half
starting to strip the coating off the rear tail section
what'd you pay for that if you don't mind me asking?
well that's kind of tricky. i traded the body of a mustang i had for the car. the guy was a few hours away and sent a bunch of pictures. it looked nice and the bike is a great 5 footer the way it was. i agreed to the deal after lots of communication. he trailered the bike out to me and we made the swap. had he been local, i probably would have passed but it was easy for me to get out of the car. but price wise, i would say i'm around 7k into the bike with trade value. i planned to put another 1k-1,500 into it making it right and some small mods. already having the fresh paint, power commander, front fairing with stereo and being a police bike helped make it easier. i'd love a street glide now. but i guess i'll rock with this thing for half the price and upgrade in a few years

glad it helped. if you need any other help or pics feel free to ask.

Did same thing with a 2000 FLHP. Except I bought mine directly from the Police service auction. Was reasonably well maintained. Rode it for a month the alternator died. Figured it out. Replaced it. That winter I did as you did . I stripped it down to frame including engine and trans. Rebuilt engine to a 95". Rebuilt the trans to a 6speed Baker DD6. Redid paint in Cadilliac Pearl White (painted myself). Replace blonde aluminuum parts with Chrome. Installed cruise control (HD one). Replaced headlight, etc
Wait , its easier to tell you what I didn't replace. The Frame. The rims the engine cases and trans case. I later rebuilt engine with a new stroker crank and made it a 104" (actually HD screwed up and sent me .10 over pistons that were marked standard). That took me 4 years with about 20,000 kilometers (sorry we are in Canada) each summer. Now my son is riding it and I have a street glide i'm customizing. Doesn't end. LOL
sounds like a sweet project. share some pics. or do you have a link? and no, i don't think it ever ends. this bike was supposed to get me out of building projects. just have something to cruise. that lasted 2 days. and now i'm looking at doing a top end upgrade with cams later this year

I have a whole set of engine chrome off my 99 RK that I would let go real cheap if your interested. Really nice condition!

That's very kind Mike, but that photo answers a query I was thinking through, like how to secure the battery and I see there is a small tab on the frame cross-member. I shall make my new tray up so I can use that feature!
Mike, taking another look at your photos, I strongly recommend you discard those lowering blocks. They are renowned for splitting that style of swingarm, across the top of the axle slots. If you prefer the low look there are better ways of achieving it!
Nice to see somebody in the same boat...but you take good pictures!! 58 days since i loaded up my 98 ultra classic(EVO not TC) out of the salvage yard in long island...flood bike. I think we are at about the same progress. Gotta love e-bay take off stuff. Know what you mean about projects...it was supposed to be a quick clean up and ride..LOL Looks great.

wow, thanks for the heads up. i'll rip those things off later today when i get home. lowered is nice, but not if there's a penalty. i'm not building a custom show bike here

yeah, that's how it seems to go. you take one thing off. and then you start thinking "if i already am doing this, might as well do that. and if i do that, let's go ahead and finish this now instead of later.
i start a rotation for work next week and progress will hault for about 2 1/2 weeks. so i'll get done what i can this weekend and wrap it up after that. goal is to be on the road cruising by mid april since i have this break from it coming up
Your bike is coming along very nice! Those wheels are the same as mine polished stock wheels. Anyone that chromes wheels can do that for you. Mine where done for half of what chrome would have been.
