I ride when the roads are clear and the temps are 20 or more. I do have heated gloves. If I were to ride in colder weather I would add heated foot gear.
With my standards I have ridden in NW Illinois from Nov. 1st to date over 8,000 miles.
Don't give a crap about whether the roads were salted or not. Been riding since 1956 and have never had a problem with salt at all. It is a phony bogyman.
I do go out in the snow storms for the heck of it. I use my 2WD Ural sidecar for that duty. It is a fricken blast!
I went for a 130 mile ride this past Friday. Had temps in the mid-50's here in Iowa so thought I'd better take advantage. Still have some snow on the ground but the roads were great. Had to spray the bike off to get any of the road salt off though.
IMHO, it isn't the salt as much as the Magnesium Chloride that they use here in Colorado. There aren't enough Q-Tips in the world to get it out of all of the nooks and cranny's on the bike, and personally, I am too lazy to spend that much time washing my bike.
Rode last week between 30-40 when it was dry and don't have any heated gear. Chaps and a parka work just fine.
