I thought modern Harleys have a method to detect pinging and adjust timing automatically to prevent it. Something about the ECU monitoring spark decay voltage to sense pinging. I guess motor performance would be reduced if it retarded timing.
After a minute of research, Google says Harley has a patent on the spark decay voltage method of knock detection but I don't know if it's used on current bikes.
As long as you're not getting any pinging the 89 is fine.
Problem with this line of thought is that so many riders out there wouldn't hear pinging, or even have a clue what they were hearing if they did hear it. Just read some of the pinging threads around here and that will be obvious.
I always laugh at this argument. Have seen it posted before and everyone gets started. Most of us have basically spent 20 to 25000 of a toy. We don't think a thing about spending money for add ons. Then we worry about spending another 25 or 30 cents a gallon to put in the recommended fuel. Give me a break. LOL

The money never made sense to me either. I put 7k miles a year on the bike and get like 40mpg, which amounts to 175 gallons of gas. Where I fuel up, 89 is about $0.10 cheaper, so that amounts to saving, $17.50 a year...
Not even worth the thought, IMHO.
Now that's one smart man right there.
Except I only get 35 MPG and they are now charging a 30 cent difference between grades and I get 5% cash back from my credit card. I dropped down t 87 when I'm riding the highway all day and don't notice a bit of distance....

Less of the charge will burn during combustion and deposits will build up faster leading to preignition. The very thing that some think high octane will avoid. Want to build up deposits in the combustion chamber even faster. Use octane booster. That stuff will build up spots of purple deposits that will hold heat and cause pinging.
My big bore kit doesn't like lower octane.....to hell with messing with all the money spent making it a beast to just throw low octane in it and hope for the best! I'll stick with high all day.
