So, here in the real world, what did this sort of project cost you?
And at what height do I need to get new clutch cables, brake lines, wires, etc...
I have a 2012 FLHX and I'm looking at 10" or 12" bars.
If you are in NoVa I may be able to help. Heck, I might even do'em for ya.
As far as pricing you have to break out the labor when thinking about cost. There is a pretty wide range of prices on different bars, cables, etc. Then there might be other things you want to do while tearing things down. I don't pay much attention to labor prices since I do my own work, but that sounds outrageous. My guess is that the shop doesn't have much experience at it and are trying to charge actual time for someone with not much experience instead of charging a flat labor rate.
if you are patient and can turn a screw driver you can do this yourself. it might take you all day to do it but it will save you a ton of cash. i dont know about you but i dont make as much as the dealer would charge in a day at my job so doing it myself is like paying myself to drink and work on my bike.
Also there is no better price then being able to stand back and look and say i did that, or give your buddy that is helping you that celebritory high-five!
I went to the dealer before i did mine and a guy was there with my exact bike but he had the dealer install the harley mini-apes. he told me they charged him about $1100 bucks for everything. i spent $85 and i have the pride of saying "i did it myself."
I have always liked modifiying everything i own and i love doing all the work myself. frees up some more cash for other projects.
Got 10" apes from road 6 customs. $200. I installed. Using same cables. A few hours of work. So I spent a total of just $215. I spent $15 for beer. Lol
All in I think it came to about $800, but I live in Canada and had to pay for insane amounts of shipping and duties because of the weight and size of the box.
All ordered from Hill country customs, everything in one kit and went together perfect.
My buddy just had bars put on his Road King and by the time he was done, it was about $1800.
How is that even possible? My total was just a little north of $1200. And that included the bars and cables, Heat Demons, chrome master cylinder and switch housing. And I didn't do a thing because I'm busy working 60/hrs a week.
