I see guys posting in the classifieds wheels for ABS or Non-ABS bikes... what's the difference?
Currently I have a non-abs EG. If I buy a set of wheels for it, will I be able to move them to an ABS EG later? Would it just require new mounting hardware?
I dont think the wheels matter. The only difference I can think of is the ABS bikes have a different bearing than the non ABS bikes. The non ABS bikes also use a different spacer. It shouldnt't keep you from purchasing a wheel if you see one you like. You will just have to replace the bearing and get the correct spacer for your application.
ABS wheels have an ABS bearing on the left side of the front wheel and the right side on the rear wheel. That bearing is 3mm thicker (wider) than the non ABS bearing.
Low Counrty Joe has a nice thread on it (wheel bearing swap). Essentially, the abs bearing you pull has the be the first one seated.
I know the ABS bearing is thicker than the non-ABS bearing. I'd make sure before I laid out a lot of money. There may be a deeper seat for that bearing
Remember that you need to find a bearing the correct size from a source other than h d as the numbers they use are not able to be cross referenced, ( to my knowledge), a bearing kit from harley lists for about $80 and unless you can install yourself, a special internal gripping tool needed, another $xxx for dealer install. There are enough wheels for sale , you should get the ones you need and forget the extra trouble and expense.
I'm picking up a EG Police in a few weeks that doesn't have ABS. I am getting a hell of a deal on the bike and it's going to be a perfect way for me to get on a Harley.
I find myself wanting to customize and upgrade the hell out of it (as you all know) but there comes a point where the "deal" I'm getting on the police bike isn't such a deal because I could have just bought a Streetglide or Ultra and had a lot of the features already.
So, if I decide to upgrade to a set of chrome agitators I'd like to be able to take them back off the EG I have now and put them on an Ultra in the future... see what I'm getting at...
