GOTTA remember that some of that waterproof grease DOESN'T mix with the regular grease that May have been used before.
That Green grease looks like good stuff... Like it saying waterproof.
Did it stay inside the tube good?
I have used a thick Red synthetic (?) and it doesn't Oose out like some do.
HD only puts on enough grease to coat the bearings and races for asseembly when they put it together. (Bean Counters = saves $$$$)
Some buyers and HD @ new sales Don't pump in the needed grease until after 10 to 20 thousand miles,,,, some find their neck bearings worn-out at that stage.
New bike? Grease the neck with a good thick synthetic in my Book...
I liked the idea to use Kleenex to get the old away and cleaned up Then pump in the new. I have had good luck with not needing my shoelace to help it pump out the top on my 09 FLHR...
just put a 45 degree zerk fitting on it, cheap and simple
Cheap maybe, simple NOT, if I had my hands around the neck of the guy that designed and placed that grease nipple there I'd just might think about squeezing.
Replaced the straight with a 90, started to screw it in and the 90 hit the bottom of the triple tree and wouldn't go tight. the fitting was one of those two piece ones where you can unscrew the 90 part, so i screwed in the straight part and lo and behold when it tightened up the 90 degree part was pointing towards the front tire in the wrong direction. the only way to use it was to loosen it up so it pointed back towards the tank, put in the grease, remove it, and screw the stock straight one back,.
hopefully the 90 degree gun adapter will work better.
Man if they had just installed the nipple back a few inches there would be no problem...
I don't know if HD has changed the location over the years, but I can get on my 2011 Limited with a straight grease gun simply by turning the bars to the right.
i'm glad this topic came up again. i was thinking about using the lucas red n' tacky grease, and from what i'm reading it doesn't seem to seep out during the hot summer months. i can imagine the mess it'd make as it dripped on the fender and blew all over the front of the motor.
It takes 5 minutes to take the fairing off and that chrome piece that is in front of the zerk fitting...then you have full access to it. This will only be done once a year or every other year??? Not a big deal really.
