what little i know about sound and pipes, just for you
mellow and deepneeds big diameter tubes...whether the trex style or big fat slipons...loud is kept in check with baffles and sharpness muffled by fiberglass packin...i started with V&H true duals/basicslip ons...they were tame at idle and cruzin, butbarked well withthe throttle...i wanted louder so i started by cuttin a section outof thebaffle and reweldin it, repackin it & shoulda stopped there cause it was sweet...with 4" diameter slip ons the sound was deep....but oh no, i wanted more so i cut the baffle down to 3" withbasically just the end cone and no packin...ITS LOUD...an it got worse when i pumped up the compression...now my bike sounds brutal...i love it...i'd also love it to be quieter but now i done chunked the cut off stuff and have had toorder some new baffles....by starting with big tubes and changing whats inside alittle at a time you can tailor your sound...keep in mind tho if you pump some power into the motor its gonna change again
thats what i know
The rule is that the louder the pipes are, the lousier the performance at low and mid-range rpms where we spend most of our time. The sound of loud pipes tend to make you think your bike's running stronger but it's in your head -- they actually rob you of low-end to mid-range torque. True duals also aren't performance pipes due to unequal pipe lengths between the two cylinders. Stock headers with performance slip ons are better for torque than straight pipes or true duals. Two into one is the way to go if you're looking just for performance in the range most of us ride our Harleys. If loud is all you care for, though, let 'er rip.
I have a good friend that has the V&H's big shot duals with the quiet baffles, sound great, the stock baffles were a little loud, especially if you were behind him.
Take your baffles out and wrap them tightly in fiberglass. Use some bailing wire to hold it in place.
Experiment with more or less. You will get a much deeper tone. Might need to repack glass every 10k miles or so.
