My dad taught me how to ride on his '69 Suzuki TC120 when I was only 5 years old. I couldn't reach the ground so he would have to help me start and stop. I didn't learn how to shift for a few years. I just got to ride in circles around the house. When I was 15 (1990) my parents had divorced and I convinced my dad to get the bikes running again. He also owned a '69 Honda CL450. We got both bikes cleaned up nice and running again. He let me ride on the street with him even though I wasn't old enough to even get a permit. We would just stick to back roads and within about 10-15 miles from home. This really got my dad back into bikes. He slowly started buying up all the bikes he wanted as a teenager. He also bought a used V-Max for a nice reliable bike. That meant I got to ride his 450 too. Dad bought dusty, rusty old Japanese and British bikes and would fix them up occasionally selling one or two. Today he has 35-40 bikes in his garage, shed, basement, anywhere he can stuff them. The basement is like a parts department. All the while we would ride together and I would get to pick whatever ran at the time. Some favorites over the years would be the '74 Yamaha RD250, the '72 Kawasaki 750 triple (he still has this one and is getting the trans rebuilt right now), the '67 Triumph T120TT Special, the '72 Triumph Trophy 250 (this was my first experience with a shifter on the right side, brake on left), the '76 Suzuki GT750 (the water buffalo) and the 1970 Honda CB750 to name a few.
My dad still rides but we didn't get much time to ride together over the last few years due to our work schedules. He's also not big on long trips but I would love to get in a few nice afternoon rides this year. Funny thing, my brother never got into it. He got his permit twice but never followed through with the license. I got my license as soon as the snow melted after I turned 16. I kind of like that my brother wasn't into it though. It will always be a thing between just me and my dad.

Not with my dad. He hates bikes. I have gone the opposite way. Helped my son with purchasing his first bike (hd 1200 custom). While I'm writing this he is attending his last day of riders edge class and taking his test, the whole time I can't wait till he gets home so I can ride next to my son. He will be heading of to boot camp at the end of the month so I had to make sure we had a couple riding weekends before he leaves. I hope it won't be the last weekends I get to ride with him!!!! Ride as much as you can with you dad and brother. I'm sure it makes you dad the happiest man on the planet.

My father and I are taking off for Sturgis and a Pacific NW tour in August. He just retired in March and we've talked about this ride since I was knee high to a grass hopper. We're taking off from Lower Alabama. Should be epic!

My dad wasn't a rider but I did take him for a ride (yes 2-up) before he passed (cancer). Now my son rides and although he lives in RI we still meet and ride together. He bought his sportster in NC and we rode back to RI together. He kept asking to ride my Ultra on the way but that wasn't happening. We are now planning to meet at Rolling Thunder in May as well as doing a ride together in August. I love riding with him, we have lots of laughs. Maybe I will let him ride the Ultra this time!!!

My dad died many, many years ago and I'm the only one in our small family that rides. I hope to live long enough to ride with my son who is only 11. I'll be 60 ish before he can take his test. I do take him out when I can to "mould" him into liking bikes. It's working sofar.
I envy you man!!

Thumbs up

My dad had to wait till my brother and I were out of the house and after he and mother paid for all my college he had a brand new '05 Heritage... My brother soon followed with a Night Train and they rode together often. I was into drag racing my Chevelle and did that for ten years pretty often. Well...about a year and a half ago, dad decided to buy a Limited for him and mother to enjoy more together....and my brother bought a Street Glide the same day, and told me that I needed to ride that Heritage to keep the battery charged. I got hooked within minutes. I eventually bought the heritage and since then I have sold my racing operation, bought a new street glide, and driven about 10 thousand miles with my whole family on the road with me. Theres nothing like it in the whole world. Kind of sorry I didnt do it sooner but the old mans plan is in full swing and has worked like a champ. My avatar is my brother, dad, and I with "Mule Ears" in the background from Big Bend National Park.
