Default Oil Cooler gasket Install help from those who have done it

I am in the process of preparing to install my new Harley oil cooler on my Street Glide. I have two questions about the gasket for those that have done it themselves. The instructions say that if your gasket has the light colored backing then peel off the backing in order to place the adhesive side on the adapter. Mine has a light colored backing on both sides of the gasket. I have picked at and pried trying to get the backing off but all its doing is ruining the gasket? The backing seems to be smooth and almost waxy so I'm pretty sure it should be removed. If there is backing on both sides of the gasket I assume both backings must come off? Anybody know what's up with that? I'll ruin the damn gasket before I get the backing off but being almost waxy, I can't see how the gasket would seal without removing it. Second gasket question is that it appears as though it can only go on one way? However, the gasket has two short slots and one long. When placed on the adapter the little piece of gasket material between the long slot and the short one falls kind of in the middle of the long slot on the Adapter? Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same questions. The first one that I installed did have the adhesive backing on one side. The second one did not. The second one leaked so I used a little black gasket seal.

So how the hell do you tell which is which? Directions say if its light colored peel the backing. Mine has light coloring on both sides and feels almost waxy instead of like rubber but it sure doesn't seem like there is a backing that will come off. I've prodded and picked at the edges in different spots and all I seem to be doing is tearing the gasket edges?

Default Dawg???

Dawg, is there any way to tell which gasket I received with my oil cooler, adhesive sided or non adhesive sided?

I bought the Kit # 26155-09-SUBA for my 2010 FLHX. The gasket bag has the following number on it 26115-05-SUB1.

The instructions state that if the gasket has light coloring, peel off the film to expose the adhesive. Since mine has light coloring on both sides of the gasket, and since it feels waxy instead of rubbery I'm assuming it peels off. I cant manage to peel it off no matter where I try on the gasket. Seems to be just ruining the gasket? Any info you can help me with would be very much appreciated? You seem to always be the go to guy for this stuff! Rick

If both sides of the gasket are the same color then there is NO adhesive. If one side is lighter than the other then there is adhesive.

The adhesive was used to hold the gasket in place correctly orientated for installation. If you have no adhesive then just make sure that the gasket is correctly orientated as you install it. Refer to the exploded view in the I-sheet for the correct orientation.

Most guys use a very thin application of Permatex to hold it in place.

Well, both sides are the same lighter color. However, you can also see the much darker rubber color all around the outside edge. The flat surfaces just feel too waxy and smooth to be the actual gasket surface? So that's the key though?? If its only one lighter side then its a peel and stick. Otherwise I'm just good to go? Thanks
